Yes. I gutted the thermometer, removed the F/C indicator, and ground a fraction of an inch from each of the outer digits. That permitted the remaining digits to fit (snugly) into the existing space. Although snug, I glued the whole assembly to prevent unwanted movement.
That looks like a blue version of the one I bought. Until gutted, it's definitely larger than the space available.

    You're welcome!

Five year old post, I know.

But I have the same one! I bought it from a junkyard in the Philippines, came off a 90's Mitsubishi Pajero. Did you ever use it?

I never ended up using it, it was too big. I put the smaller Toyota Hilux version instead.

Also, a much cleaner alternative to this is installing a Gentex rearview mirror. Not only do I get outside temp, I get HomeLink, Autodim, and a Compass.

This Gentex 313 came from a 2012 Nissan Titan.

I have to re-skin the dash pad in my 84 then I'll cut and fit it into that. I'm easily distracted and end up taking on too many projects at the house so it's just sitting in my garage cabinet with other electrical whatnots.

Is your artificial horizon working properly? Common issue is the mineral oil leaks out.

    This and that...
Did this awhile ago. Been about a year and still running on the same batteries. Just ran the cord through the door jam and under grill where the wipers are. Really accurate, but with the engine running and at a standstill, it begins to pick up that heat. Fast uninstall. Mostly need it for when it gets close to 32 degrees here in the mountains. No led so doesn't distract at night, but with my red leds on my map lights is easily readable.

    Had a 2002 DC, now a 2004 DC.
Alright, I will resurrect this thread! I did this mod to my 2002 a few years ago, and want to do the same with my 2004. I cannot find the right (same) thermometer. I previously used the one that Norton recommended, and it fit like a charm. I have tried the usual suspects like eBay and Amazon. I would prefer red, and want Fahrenheit readings. Any ideas?
