Out of the loop for years, what should a 2.4 clutch replacement cost?

Last time I had a clutch replaced was 10 years ago, $500 for lifetime clutch and no tax (Oregon) on a Camry.

Couple of questions since I'm at their mercy and no one will quote me a price over the phone:

    1) In Tigard, Oregon area, what is a decent price to put in a clutch on my 2.4?

    2) From what I've learned on this forum, my slave cylinder is what's causing my clutch pedal to be stiff as hell. What's a fair price to get slave cylinder replaced? I'd fix it myself if I was physically able, believe me.

    3) What's a fair price for both master & slave cylinder replaced?

Finally, can anyone recommend a shop in the Tigard area? Very grateful for all the advice I've found on here.

If you have a 4x4 and need flywheel. Probably be around $1500+. If not 4x4 it will be less and if your flywheel can be resurfaced even less. That’s in California too most likely high estimate being your in Oregon.

Its fair that shops don't want to quote over the phone. Sometimes it may just need a clutch and flywheel, or it might need hydraulics too. If they quote too high to cover their butts (hydraulics AND clutch kit for example) they'll sound expensive and scare you away. If they quote too low, they risk having to do part of the job for free just to get it all done and driveable.

The days of sub 1,000$ clutch jobs is over. If you're 4x4 I'd expect at least 1,500 minimum

Yes it's the basic 2 wheel drive, 1996 2.4. You'd think this would be the cheapest clutch to replace since it's neither front wheel drive or four wheel drive.

I'm thinking since it shifts and drives fine that it's not the clutch, but the pedal is stiff as hell, maybe shot slave cylinder.

So what's a fair price to just replace a master and slave cylinder these days? Wish I was 18 again, I'd do it myself after school and be driving again in an hour lolz.

I’m not familiar with that layout. But Does it go into gear alright? Can you make that clutch slip? Or If your main problem is the stiffness of the clutch pedal?

Does a "fair price" even matter if you're just throwing parts at it?

Usually the only way for a slave to fail is by leaking. If it isn't leaking it's probably fine. I guess it could seize up internally but that's gotta be pretty rare.

If you're feeling increased resistance like something is binding I suspect something inside the bell housing, like a release bearing sticking on the quill or a clutch fork sticking on the pivot.

I've seen the pivot wear a hole in the clutch fork and start to go through it. Then it's stuck and doesn't want to hinge back and forth

Shifts perfectly with no noise or slips, even when I go hard on it. But it damn needs both feet to push the stiff clutch pedal down, so I'm sure it's a busted slave cylinder. How much should that cost to fix on a 2WD?

I bought my own parts and with labor it was around $500. I guess it kinda depends on where you live and who does the work

Took it to a shop today and they said there was nothing wrong, my knee is just too thrashed to press the clutch.

I recently had my master cylinder and slave cylinder replaced at a Toyota dealership for $600 total OTD. Slave cylinder was $185 and master cylinder was $415 for a 97 4x4

You are brave. I heard dealerships really rob you as much as possible over an independent shop.

This isn’t exactly what you asked but I recently did my own in my driveway but only because my rear main seal was leaking and I had to be in there anyway. I bought a kit from Rock Auto and think with the cost of resurfacing the flywheel it cost me $200 total. It was all the labor and other things that had to be done to get to that point that was difficult and would have made it expensive.

Don’t pay for a shop’s overhead for mere donkey labor if you can help it, especially the stealership. Plus when you do it yourself you can take your time and ensure it’s done correctly, not merely to make someone else money. I understand however that this isn’t an option for everybody.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the advice, but I'm 60 years old with a shot left elbow. If I was 18 I'd be all over it and get it done after work and drive it the next day :)

what is a lifetime clutch? and where can I find one lol

Clutch jobs aren't cheap at shops, the parts are relatively cheap but the labor charge is what gets you. For my truck, most shops about 6 years ago wanted anywhere from $900 - $3k to do a clutch job on my 04. The $3k was a dealer quote.

I would have them to do the rear main seal while they're in there, for peace of mind. Since the transmission has to come off anyway.

edit - nvm, just saw that the clutch wasn't the issue.

The lifetime clutch was a deal from clutch doctors here in oregon. you have them put in a clutch and the parts were replaced free forever, you just had to pay for the installation

Ah, I was hoping someone somehow invented a clutch/flywheel kit that never wears down :(
