It cannot be detected, I would not worry about it at all.

When they plug into the OBD2, all they see is stock tune calibration ID.

Very few modifications (none?) void your entire warranty. However, certain modifications could cause Toyota to not replace or repair a part of your truck for free. The warranty is an agreement that says Toyota will replace or repair manufacturing defects for free. If it’s not a manufacturing defect, they are not obligated to pay for it. Deciding what is or not a manufacturing defect is a gray area where modifications can be part of the conversation.

If you tune, and you throw a rod bearing, toyota needs to prove your tune was a direct issue.
Don't worry, Toyota will be so busy running oil analysis and looking for plenty of ways to void a warranty.
Can a tune be detected? I've heard yes and no. Guess we find out the first time someone shimes in.
A LOT also depends on your relationship with your dealer. Do you go in for oil changes? Do you pay their labor price on services? If you do, maybe they help. If you don't, Mayne they find a way to make things tough.
The answe has a thousand variables.

I agree with everything you said, but have one nit pic. Toyota does not need to prove anything to deny a warranty repair. They just need to have a reasonable confidence that it is not a manufacturing defect. This is assuming we are not talking about a court of law.

Having recently been a KDMax tune customer, I can tell you it is WORTH IT. Most tuner's provide a lifetime of support. Should something happen you were concerned about a warranty covering, you could have your tuner revert to stock > truck goes to dealer > tuner re-applies the tune....done deal.

Like others have said, it's HIGHLY unlikely a change in tune would be found by a Toyota tech. Heck, I had mine in to the dealer for 65k service at the cost of around $1,500, had it tuned 5 months later and sure enough my ECU did NOT even have the most recent TSB version.

My tuner said his discussions with local Toyota techs reveal that they don't get paid to examine specific ECU settings (throttle tip in, shift points, etc..) and thus would very rarely go past the calibration ID.

A lot of these trucks have been tuned since 2017 or so, not one case regarding a tune voiding warranty. You guys are overthinking this.

I think @Boltripper and @JustDSM would be the guys OP should contact.
Pretty sure they are “the guys” that make up OTT.
    If I were OP, I’d send them a DM:thumbsup:

Or aske in their dedicated OTT thread.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/overland-torque-tune-ott-by-overland-tailor.759590/

While I can’t speak for them.
I personally wouldn’t speak of “hiding” anything on a public forum;)
Just in case……if you know what I mean:) DMs are good in this case.

Does it void the warranty? Not necessarily.

Can it void the warranty? Absolutely!

And I call bullshit that it's not detectable. Every digital change leaves a footprint!

    Carry on!

Totally Agree! Can't hide the CVN if they really want to dig.
We have 100's if not a 1000 trucks in CA running OTT. As long as you have all mandated/OEM installed equipment you'll be just fine.

We DO NOT turn off CEL's or delete emissions equipment/functionality in our tunes. If your truck will pass stock, it will pass just the same.

    Yes and no.
    If they can detect it:
1). The burden is on you to prove it didn’t cause a failure.
2). Any tune would probably be in violation of the federal emissions laws and subject to fines if you got caught.
Coming from an FCA dealer I can say all PCMs (FCA vehicles 2015 and up) are locked. Once you unlock them, and the factory scan tool is attached, it will flag the VIN with “aftermarket calibration”.

Isn't that exactly the opposite of what the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act says?

The burden is on you, meaning your not going to mention the Magnuson act and get what you want.
The manufacturer has lawyers on the payroll it won’t cost them anything to fight you.
