I recently learned how to float my gears aka clutch less shifting and I have heard mixed reviews about it. So my question is when done right does shifting without the clutch cause any damage to your transmission, synchronizers, gears, or any other part?

I believe it's pretty hard on the synchronizers. Even if you think you've got the gears lined up, the synchros may be working much harder than you think to match things up.

That's why HD truck transmissions are non-synchronized. Those things would eat synchros. Without them, they either shift or they won't, it's all about rev matching. But, that's totally different than our transmissions.

Thanks I thought it would have to be hard on something. People have told me it puts less wear on your clutch, but defianetly not worth it for wear on the synchronizers.

Realistically, the only part of your clutch being worn between shifts should be the throwout bearing and linkage. As long as your gears are more or less lined up, there should be very little wear on the clutch plates themselves.

Those really only sustain wear when starting from a stop.

So overall is this ever worth doing or worth learning how to do?

if you do not grind gears it is perfectly acceptable to do

the problem is, you are going to grind them learning how to do it on that tranny and at all speeds

and it is technically unsafe to do on public roads
(same theory as putting it in neutral and coasting, you lose a margin of control)

    he said this

'I recently learned how to float my gears aka clutch less shifting'

[he is the only one on earth using the term 'float gears']

My bad. For some reason I thought he said "less clutch shifting" :pccoffee: it's too early.

Class 8 trucks without syncros you can. We've got an F-550 at the shop and some idiot used to float them and now 2-4 are worthless and have to jam it in or sometimes double clutch will work. Floating on passenger vehicles is harder on it than using the clutch.

Save floating gears for big rigs. A clutch is a lot less expensive than a new gear box.

You can float out of gear, but I wouldn't do it going in. Like stated earlier, no matter how good you are, you're going to grind gears.

Edit: Let me add I've got almost 100,000 miles on my clutch with no problems. As long as you rev match, you aren't going to wear your clutch down.

Came in handy for me when a slave cylinder failed. I was able to start it in gear and get it home...
