I have a 1996 extra cab with a 2.7l. I’ll eventually get a another car and start ripping out the axles in this truck.

I want to run a driver side drop Ford Dana 60 up front (because the w59 has a diver side front driveshaft). Which d60 would fit my needs? What gears should I look for? What lug pattern?

For the rear I would like to run a 14 bolt full floater 10.5”. This is my choice because it’s a simple axle, strong and cheap. I would be planning on hanging it from Chevy 63’s
And doing a disc brake conversion to it. Again, what gears? Bolt pattern? Etc

Now here is where I need some serious input/info/experience

How the hell will I steer this thing?

    From steering wheel to wheels
What setups are simple and effective?

    Suspension
I want Chevy 63’s in the rear, Will I need to run shocks too back there?
I don’t want leafs in the front. Give me some options

I’m sure I’ll have more but this is what I got off the top of my gears

    Lots of reading and researching......

Nothing will "fit" your tacoma. But with enough cutting, anything will fit. Wonton are 8 lugs btw. 3rz with wonton will be a drag. Tire size determine gear ratio.

Currently, do your tacoma have shock with leaf in the rear? If your answers is yes, then you'll need shock absorber with 63s as well.

No leaf for the front, you got 2 option: 3 or 4 link.

So you want to SAS but aren't even sure if you need shocks with leaf springs. :facepalm:I really hope that was a typo.

I suggest holding off on deciding what gears you need (which is an extremely MINOR detail), and do a bit more research first. Tons of people have SAS'd their Tacomas. Many threads about them. I'd search through the forum, and read those threads to start.

It all depends on your fabrication skills, budget, and what you'll be using the truck for. You steer these things the same way you steer any solid axle truck, anything from a simple steering box with a drag link to full hydro.

But more importantly, your skill as a driver. By some of your questions, forgive me, but you really sound like a novice. If that's the case, just stay clear of SAS for now, and focus on driving what you have. These trucks are perfectly capable with IFS. Plenty of them do the Rubicon with 33's and a mild lift.

I’ve been lurking for a bit.

I’ve got about 3” out of my OMU kit, I’m on 33x12.5’s and keep up most the time with my buddies sas’d runner

I’m a throttle jockey, I don’t want to keep buying cv axles and putting money into a ifs build when I know I’ll beak it a lot. I plan on swapping the engine for more power at some point so sorry I even mentioned gearing, forgive me I whipped this thread up on my lunch break.

I might just do leafs to start out with because there pretty cheap. But curious on other setups people have run. What steering boxes do most use? Will a 79-94 pickup or 4runner do the trick?

95.5 was the first year of the Tacoma, but the pickups had been IFS for the decade prior.

If you want toyota solid axle parts, you need to get something from an 85 or older.

As I said, search around the forum for folks' solid axle builds. There are several

Just search "SAS" in the 1st gen Build sub-forum...

You have lots of searching to do... my build is in my bio and has a pretty good parts list on the first page for leafs and going towards the end shows the work to do links.

oh yeah I do, just starting to gather parts now and keeping it as low budget as possible.

can anyone tell me what year of d60 I should keep an eye out for and what i might find them under. I’ve done lots of reading about them but want to know what others are running

thanks for the responses and not ripping me apart too bad

Yes I know but I’m not Sasing this thing with a Toyota axle. I’m dead set on one tons d60 front 14 bolt rear. From what I’ve read you don’t want 85 or older. Some guy had one from a 85 and ended up using a 79 or so

I wasn't talking about axles. I was responding to this:

I'm saying that Toyota did not have solid axles (and hence solid axle steering boxes and other parts) on pickups or 4runners after 1985, because they switched to IFS in 1986.

So if you want a toyota steering box newer than 1985, you'll need a land cruiser or hilux. Seems like most people just get an aftermarket universal one or go hydro steer if you're feeling spicy.

I’m using a jeep tj steering box which is kind of out of the norm for Toyota stuff.

The normal one to use is a Toyota ifs box from 86-95. I have one for sale lol. Shameless plug
