I am going to change my oil this Friday and AutoZone says my 4.0 V6 uses conventional oil, not synthetic. I have synthetic in now from when I bought it from the dealership. The truck just hit 60,000 miles. Should I continue using standard synthetic 5w-30 or switch to high-mileage? Is there a "better" brand to use?

Synthetic is fine, so is conventional. Don’t mix them together. Make sure whatever brand you use is API certified (look on the bottle, it should have a stamp for this unless it’s cheap garbage).

No need for the high mileage stuff.

Suggest using an OEM Toyota filter if you can get them.

    Welcome to Tacoma World.

Edit: Seems the haters are out today so let me clarify. You CAN mix conventional and synthetic, it is my OPINION that you shouldn’t because really what’s the point. This is not bad information. Id personally just use synthetic because it’s cheap nowadays and same base anyways. Anyone calling this fake news should go circlejerk themselves on Bob Is The Oil Guy for a while and see how that works out.

    Edit 2:

This has all been done before. 36 pages of who has the best oil: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/best-motor-oil.58460/

Fantastic thread with more filter pictures than a pinup calendar: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/toyota-oil-filter-made-in-thailand-vs-the-competition.123608/

I'm off to do something actually productive now. Good luck OP.

Change it ever 5k miles and use either one as long as certified as suggested above. (Clean that MAF sensor at each oil change as well)

Walmart has synthetic oil cheap. AutoZone has K&N filters.

To meet the 2011 gf5 standard, most conventional oil is a synthetic blend. You own one of the best built V6 engines ever made. Just change the oil regularly with a quality 5w30 and a good oil filter and your engine should last you a very long time. I’ve been in the auto repair business for over 30 years and I’ve never seen an engine failure due to brand of oil, only lack of maintenance.

Mostly stock with a few minor mods.
This. I started with Mobil 1 and then switched to SuperTech after seeing some test results and deciding the extra money wasn't worth it. I do use Toyota filters though.

I see the general consensus about using a toyota oil filter. Since the filter screws downward, it would be difficult to put some oil in the filter. Some friend of mine swear by this and some other say to keep it dry. Is there any actual benefit to doing either?

No not with the tiny filter most gas engines use, the few secs the engine runs without oil pressure won't hurt a thing.
Now the big diesel filters that hold 1 quart+ those I usually will pre fill.

This is dead wrong information. Conventional or synthetic are fully compatible can be mixed. The amount of bad info here is astounding

Dab some oil on the filter gasket and spin it on. No need to worry about filling these small filters with oil.

Try this anyway. Prefill the filter and you’ll see the oil soak into the pleats, turn it on its side you can usually wet the filter enough then just turn the engine over without starting. It usually primes very quickly.

You should use synthetic oil. I buy Napa Synthetic 5w-30 on sale for around $4/qt, and use a Toyota OE oil filter (2005 4.0 v6)

Hypothetically there is a benefit to prefilling the filter, and I prefill the cartridge housing on my 3rd gen, but it's obviously too messy with the upside down filter.

Depending on which part of the country you live in, don't worry about the Tacoma powertrain. Spend your time and money on corrosion protection, because ultimately rust will be the limiter on the truck's life.

When did you snag your Pro, was it recently (in this shit show of a sellers market)?
Either way congrats on owning the sweetest Taco ever put together (15 Pro), in my opinion.
And take good care of her:thumbsup:
