Which oil type should I go with? Are they both the same? And only makes different to where you live wether it’s cold or hot environment?
My last oil change I used 0w-20 and then yesterday I used 5w-20. Lmk thank you taco community.

Manual calls for 0W-20 and says if 5W-20 is used to go back to 0W-20 at next oil change. They then go on to say:
An oil with a higher viscosity (one with a higher value) may be better suited if the vehicle is operated at high speeds, or under extreme load conditions.
I tow a good bit and use 0W-30. If you look at oil specs for the 2tr-fe in other parts of the world they are all over the place.

I see a few independent shops putting 5W20 in these engines, especially in warmer climates.

This forum is almost 100% Taco owners, not petroleum engineers or automotive engineers. Why do you think we know more than the experts, the engineers regarding lubrication? The 5-20 probably won’t make much difference, I doubt your engine is going to wear out sooner or blow up tomorrow. But I’m not smarter or more knowledgeable than the engineers that contributed to the owners manual and neither is anyone else on the forum. So I still say just follow the owners manual then you have one less thing to worry yourself about.

If cars were made by automotive engineers in a vacuum, you would get a range of oil viscosities that are acceptable to use for your engine across different temperature ranges and usage applications, instead your owner’s manual is a legal document that is constrained by legal and environmental regulations.

There's more to oil than the weight/viscosity. Use what the manufacturer recommends.

I know enough to be dangerous when it comes to lubricants...but I do know someone who is VERY well versed in oil formulations and read a lot of his posting on a couple professional forums on the subject....it makes my head hurt.

Did you know there are thick and thin (High HTHS vs Low HTHS) 5W-30 oils?...and no, they're not interchangable. Stick with an ILSAC GF6 0W-20

I don’t know what all that means, I don’t even know if it’s accurate. The bottom line remains just follow the damn OM, no questions, no problems. There are hundreds and hundreds of oil threads on TW. And after hundreds of threads and thousands and thousands of reply’s, not a single thing has ever been resolved, zero, nada, zilch. I had decided not to respond to any more oil threads because they are all crap and resolve nothing but I made the mistake of making a simple and factual statement on this thread and now regret that. I see the error of my ways. I’m outta here. Keep at it guys (and gals) , the truth is out there somewhere, just ain’t going to be found in a oil thread

What engine from 07 in a Tacoma calls for 20 weight oil? I thought they all called for 30 weight oil? At least my 06 2.7l 2TFRE does....is yours a v-6?

Here's the official dope from Toyota on what the 2006-2009 Tacomas require for engine oil (and some other important fluids.)

    1GR-FE = 6 cylinder engine.
    2TR-FE = 4 cylinder engine.

    FWIW --

I went through that thread carefully, at least the main/first page of it. Looks to be focused entirely on the 1GR-FE V6 engine. I don't see any reference to the 2TR-FE. Poor 4-banger owners get no respect...

@kidthatsirish Yep, my 07 manual recommends 0/20 or 5/20 for the 4 cyl, suggesting 0/20 for better fuel economy and better starts in cold climate.
