Howdy, I’ll start with saying, I am not a mechanic. I am just a Tacoma owner who loves their truck.
I have a 2016 SR5 with a 3.5L and 92k miles on it. It has zero oil pressure, the oil pump failed, and at a minimum, spun the first bearing. The engine is knocking. It’s currently at my second opinions shop.
So far, two separate mechanics have dug in and found no “reason” for this failure. Both have come to the conclusion that it is nothing that I or anyone (oil change techs etc) has done and it must me a mechanical/manufacturing issue. This truck has had maintenance every 5k miles and has never had any other issues.
I’ve done deep diving and have found a ton of service bulletins for oil pressure issues/sensor issues and such for this specific year/make/model. My truck is far out of warranty.
It seems that no one wants to rebuild or even replace this engine because of it being “finicky”.
Can anyone give me more info on this? Why is it so finicky? What are the issues?
Im also hesitant to ask for opinions on the internet, but, what would you do?
Please, I’m asking for kindness and guidance! If you have no helpful input, or are tempted to say “stop complaining”, “what’s the point”, or “dump it and move on”, please try and keep it to yourself and save it for someone else. I’m not made of money and am trying to gather information to make the best decision. To be clear: I’d like to know if anyone has had this issue or come across this issue. Is there something that we’re missing? How did you/they go about solving this?

It's not different than any other engine.
Get a new one or a old one. Put it in and move on.

I have heard from a guy who knows a guy who met a guy who's friends with a guy that you can call corporate and get them to cover a lot of the cost. You buy a Tacoma because they last, not because they have oil pump failures at 92k :). Not guaranteed but worth a shot..

Yeah, I bought this truck because of the reliability and ended up with the dud. Extremely disappointing and stressful.

Has it ever had any major work? Timing cover reseal? oil pan reseal?

I've seen oil pick up screens clog because of excessive sealant used during these repairs.

Also seen poor quality oil filters deteriorate and clog passages.

I’m at this point. It’s ridiculous and I’m hoping that Toyota will hold up their standards and help me out…it’s a reach, but fingers crossed.

It’s never had any major or minor repairs. It’s only had oil changes and balance/rotations…the basics. that’s good information though, thank you!

I personally know of 50% and 75% coverages before but takes persistence. On items like this, definitely a rough mark for Toyota...

So you came here hoping for what result exactly? Your way out of warranty and a freak thing happened that resulted in a cooked bearing. You got two choices, fix it and move on or dump it and move on.

The feeling of dissapoitment is normal, hoping a bunch of strangers on the internet can fix it is not.

    Best of luck OP.

Welcome to the forum :hattip: sorry this has to be your first post.

If you have documentation for the 5K oil changes Toyota might assist you on the repair. It would take a lot of polite persuasion with corporate and probably won't work out but you could try.

From a more practical standpoint, people crash these trucks every day so a low mile used engine is the easiest and probably least costly way to get back on the road.

    Please keep us informed.

I think @Buttskevin21 has a motor for sale. Not too far from Colorado. You might see if it's compatible. Price is a bargain compared to what dealers are charging.

Ouch, did this somehow touch a nerve?
Maybe I’ll update to make it clear “has anyone else had this problem and how did you solve it?”.
A new engine isn’t cheap. A used engine isn’t cheap. Maintenance work isn’t cheap. And a new truck isn’t cheap. I’m posting in hopes that someone out here knows something that I don’t. Curious as to why you’re on this forum if you don’t think a bunch of internet people can’t help. You’re making that statement true!

This is by far the most helpful and kind response I’ve had yet. Thank you!

I appreciate you. I was quoted 6.2k for a used engine with fairly low mileage and about 5.5-6k for installation and a new oil pump. This is a rough maintenance estimate. And the cheapest one yet.
Toyota quoted 11k (not including labor). It’s frustrating because im not a car person, so im not confident on what’s “right/wrong”. I could do a trade in but I’m trying to gather info and see what is the most affordable option.

Honestly, if it were me I'd trade it in and lease/buy something else.
