So I bought and installed a really nice Kenwood HU (DNX 997xr). I was a little bummed about it not being able to report oil pressure. So, why isn't the oil pressure available? The ECU has to keep track of this to trip the idiot light.... right? What is everyone else doing for an oil pressure reading?

You don’t want to see the oil pressure readings. “It can’t be that low, can it?”

the idiot light is just a pressure threshold switch.... a go no go type of thing at a certain (very low) psi, it does not measure psi and report it back actively.

I assume you may have the Maestro RR?
The first mod I would always do when I was a young lad was to install an oil pressure gauge in one of my old American cars. It seemed to be very important back then. I had to install a sensor in an engine block port (remove a bolt and install the adapter) and run a thin plastic hose through the firewall to the gauge. I imagine it would be the same now days. I actually gave up monitoring the oil pressure years later after I stopped heavily modifying the engines. It would be cool but maybe un-necessary to have an oil pressure monitor in a modern stock reliable engine.

Or trucks use a simple open/closed pressure switch, theres no sensor. You would have to add your own gauge and sensor to read oil pressure, the PCM does not monitor it.

FWIW......Actually, its fairly simple to access and monitor various parameters on the Tacoma. Scan (Ultra) gauges give you digital readouts of coolant and trans fluid temps, voltage, etc and adaptors sandwiched between the oil filter and engine have ports for electrical senders that can monitor oil pressure and temp (either analog or digitally), requiring only a wire into the cab for the gauge(s).

Correct on the Maestro RR. I have everything Except oil pressure ..it even monitors the EGT. I feel rather "naked" driving without an oil pressure guage.... I am familiar with pressure transducers (sensors), so maybe if this feeling becomes too uncomfortable, I'll tackle it.
What is the location of this pressure switch?

4 psi at idle, so that light comes on below 4 psi of oil pressure. If that happens when running, your engine is toast

Get a nice gauge from Auto Meter or ISSPRO to monitor if you are concerned.

    per Toyota, oil pressure spec:
Idle speed: More than 29 kPa - (4.2 PSI)
    3,000 rpm: More than 294-539 kPa - (42.6 - 78.1 PSI)

yeah so if you’re over 3k RPM and that light comes on, that will be a bad day. It will be far too late for that engine by the time the light comes on.
