So i was driving yesterday and my drivebelt came off. no biggy just pulled over and slipped it back on. looked closer at my pulleys and saw oil spoys on them. looked closer and my buddy and i saw oil coming out from behind the crank pulley. how hard to fix and how much? any advice would be helpful.

I would just try and see if the torque on the bolt is set to 200lbs if not that may be the problem if not then hopefully someone else chimes in

You probably need to replace the front main seal. I had mine go bad around 60k (just before powertrain warranty ended. Here's a few pictures from below my crank pully. Probably looks similar to yours...the undercarriage air moves the oil towards the rear of the vehicle as it drips down.

I did mine a couple of years back, not a bad job but does take some time. All it cost me was $20 or so for the seal.

Hey what all did you have to do to install that seal? can u share any good information to help us fellow tacoma members? i might have to do that job in the near future. Part numbers? caution tips? torque values? Can a novice mechanic like myself handle that job-difficulty of job?

when installing my supercharger I found my front crank seal leaking with only 18K on the clock. told the service rep when I drove in to get my ECM flashed for the SC and he said cant do anything until its visibly leaking. obviously I cleaned it off but brought in my original crank bolt covered in oil and still no go o_O

to fix, you will need a crankshaft pulley tool to keep prevent the pulley from spinning while undoing and torqueing that bolt to 200ft lbs. then carefully pry the seal out w/o scratching the crank and seating new seal back in.

no need to drain the oil as the crank seal is in the block above the pan.

Just fyi; I had the same issue a 2 years ago and was ready to replace that seal when the oil change interval came up and so after replacing the oil I never got anymore leaks from the front crank seal. The only thing I could figure out was that I must have overfilled it the previous time I did an oil change. I haven't had anymore leaks since than........and BTW the torque value on that crank pulley is not 200ft pounds, it's like 180 flb

Nice, I wonder what was it then, usually when that seal goes, it goes. If you overfilled oil it would have to be seriously overfilled to reach that spot. but who knows./
Lucky crank seal is nothing "urgent" since there is no pressure behind it. So when it leaks you can drive with out issue for many miles or at least to next oil change.

Thats good feedback on the oil level. How much oil are you putting in? I typically put in a full 5 quarts and the dipstick reads full. Also good info on the the crank bolt torque for non SC'd guys. I guess SC pulley requires an extra umph just to be safe.

@68vet, I don't go by quarts I just take note of how many quarts are required and fill it up the old school way by checking
the dipstick, pour some in, check dipstick again, pour some more.... and keep checking the level as I pour it in. I learned that filling it up to the middle of the dipstick mark is perfect for my truck and it doesn't use any oil between intervals. Then I start the engine to circulate the oil into the filter and check level again..........

The dipstick is the only way I know of to gauge engine oil level so I dont go by quarts either. To say it a different way, the dipstick reads full at 5 quarts. I'll have to look at the dipstick and where it bottoms out in relation to the engine. Because the crank seal is in the block. Like BlueT was saying, it would have to be seriously overfilled. I doubt full reading on the dipstick will get to that point but I'll have a look. Also with as many posts about bad front seals as I've seen here on TW, I still suspect a bad seal design. Thanks for the suggestions

Block? Odd, mine is in the timing cover. Had to have every seal on the truck replaced at various intervals on the 05. Was drivetrain warranty but that only means they broke harness clips, left off brackets, left the crank pulley bolt hand tight, cracked windshield putting cold water on it after it sat out all day in summer sun & free wasn't really free after you factor in all the wasted time and more wasted time chasing what they broke or didn't put back right. Yeah, seals sucked.
