no, it's the same oil filter as on the 4.0 V6 in 2gen Tacomas. The upside down filter screws into the metal base and has a little drain valve/plug at the bottom to drain oil drips. I can't unscrew this valve, it just turns in place and it has a little rubber dust cover that also seems stuck.

Not sure what you are referring to. There is a nipple underneath the assembly that you would drain the oil that would leak out when removing the filter. That nipple is covered by a rubber plug that most of us misplace within the first few oil changes. Not needed to replace. Yours may be hard to remove over time and try spraying some oil on it and work the rubber plug off with a screw driver or simply cut it off. There is nothing to turn. Here's mine without the rubber plug:20190927_181245.jpg

It's not 2015? Watch battery must be dead.

I use whatever 5w30 oil/filter on sale. Change every 5k currently at 173k miles mostly supertech/chevron/shell oil & ST/proline/purolator/fram filters. Ive tried synthetic 4-5x doesn't really make differences for my needs. What surprised me is the new supertech filter st3614 @ $2.97 has 10k miles LOL...really??? Would any of you go 10k on this filter?
On my rx suv Ive started using purolator one(10k miles advertised) and flushing out the oil at 5k. Yeah, yeah...the rule change filter w every oil change. If its rated 10k miles why not. But the filter location on suv gets messy and taking off the factory bottom cover is another hassle. With the taco its EZ no mess I use zippy lock bag over the filter and have fumoto valve.

What do you guys think 10k for ST filters?

You guys are lucky, I miss my 2nd gen. I used to be able to change the oil in 10 minutes...3rd gen is a royal pain in the ass!

I love changing the oil on my truck, I spend more time drinking beer than I actually do working, takes like 10 mins and that is taking my time lol. I would pay someone to do the oil changes on my 4Runner though, that vehicle kicks my ass everytime I change the oil in it. The oil filter element is a pain in the ass to get to, and to take off.

You can find cheap geniune Toyota filters at the Toyota of Dallas parts website, 30% off retail. I get all my parts from them.
