Going on 3 months with my 24 OR and I’ve had an occasional oil leak. Decided to take the truck into Toyota servicing yesterday for her first service at ~3400mi. This is my first Toyota vehicle.

After about two hours, the service manager and lead mechanic called me in to tell me they’d like to “keep the truck for a few days”.

Turns out, the oil filter was mis-threaded at the the factory during assembly, which fractured the oil filter seal, causing the leak. Service team claims they don’t believe there’s any engine damage, but need to keep the truck for a few days to order a replacement part and properly thread the oil filter.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? I’ve read some threads on other forums with similar issues, so this may be more common than some realize.

My only concerns are potential unrealized damage, depreciated resale, and identifying when to activate Lemon Law.

    All input welcome.

Well that's a new one. I wonder if they can unbolt and replace the oil filter thread piece with a new one or if the threads are permanently jazzed.

Make sure everything you were told and what the tech said is visible on your repair order. Just keep it in your mind and carry on.

    Personal opinion;
I work for parts in a complete different brand. Probably 4 times a year we have something come off the truck new with an issue. Theyll fix it and so far none have come back with repeat issues. As long as there's a track record of what happened. You'll have all the info you need

I saw a couple threads on the 4G forums about this. I think one guy lost an engine, not sure on the others.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Usually the thing you're threading onto is of a harder metal due to repeated usage. So as long as the threads aren't bothered up, should be fine but I'd get it replaced just in case. In some designs, the thread tube is replaceable and in some you replace the whole cooler. Glad you found it and got it taken care of before all the oil drained out and caused damage.

    Update:

Truck was still leaking after oil filter and cooler replacement + engine smelled hot after trips. Took truck back in the next day. Service center claimed they “forgot to clean up residual oil”.

Truck is tip top, for now.

Uggg... how do you "forget"? I'd keep a very close eye on this... which I'm sure is already an obvious statement. Thanks for sharing your experience.

my 3rd gen got a new short block from Toyota. When I got home and opened the hood there was coolant and power steering fluid everywhere. When I took it back they also told me they forgot to wipe the engine down afterwards. I was supposed to trust a tech who couldn't take 30 seconds to wipe down the engine to do a full engine swap. I traded that truck in the next day.

Dealerships and mechanics are really living up to the stereotypes these days.

They followed up with a text to submit a service review, but to call first with any concerns in order to make things right.

Any advice on how to handle this?

Been a dealer tech for 30 years for ford...
The techs that do the big boy real mechanic stuff are a dying breed...
Hard to come by good ones now..
    Theyre all hacks, un-experienced...
Issue is everything has become so complex, they bounce or get forced out for making too many errors, not making money, before theyre able to gain the knowledge & experience...
I paid my dues, I was a helper for well over 5 years...
My mentor didnt want to let go of me...

I was a god, I was the guy all the service writers & managers came to.
Got it done at lightning speed, it was done right the first time, every time, most of the time...:D

These kids up & coming want instant success & dont want to pay their dues to learn the profession, really learn...
Techs that dont hack everything they touch doesnt happen overnight, you need to learn the common sense, experience, finesse, diagnostic process, list goes on & on...

I know all the good guys I apprenticed under left when the dealer I was at went from local mom and pop to multi-national corporation.

A guy I apprenticed for a year had never even heard of or seen a manual transmission until we went for lunch one day in my truck... thought it was a new technology they were introducing to vehicles. Smart kid and learned well, just never messed around vehicles when he was younger and mostly got into the trade to try something. He's still in the trade and doing well. I just fear he wouldn't get the knowledge passed onto him like I got, to work on a vehicle older than 1999 or even 2007

    Same here…
I was the engine. God at the dealership….
And only new one Speed, get it done…
Family owned Ford dealership since 1927. Second generation father passed away and shortly after son sold to Penske. He had no intentions of selling at first, but the opportunity presented itself, and this kid was already set up where he didn’t have to work a day in his life from his grandfather…
I Worked for the family run business from 1991 through 2015…
Then we went big when Roger jr Penske bought it….
Roger understood who the hard-working employees were, but I had a lot to lose as a whole, it was all about dotting their eyes and crossing their tees, avoiding lawsuits as they had a lot to lose, made every day operations more difficult add had excessive hoops to jump through to accomplish daily simple tasks…..
Management leaning and pushing on us, hard-working employees , do more, do more….
Stop your difficult complex jobs that you’re in the middle of so we can diagnose the 50 other jobs that have been sitting for weeks, so we can tell the customer or something and by time.

heaven forbid you tell the customer the truth that every manufacturer dealership is backlogged and nothing is easy these days, they have to wait….
They were all afraid that these customers were going to go to another dealership and will lose them forever…
We were number one out of three dealerships in the area….
I worked for Penske from 2015 until may 2022..
Glad to be out, and I feel industries in a bad spot, they’re still trying to replace me…
They have gone through about half a dozen individuals and they have all failed.
