I went to my local Toyota dealer this afternoon Motorcars Toyota in Cleveland Heights, only to learn they no longer sell retail parts. A gripe for another story.

I was mid-way through an oil change on a 2015 4.0 V6 and the truck was in my driveway draining. Long story short, I just changed oil, not the filter. As the filter is high up, and the base of the filter is low, how much oil will leak out when I change the filter with a new one when it arrives? I'd let it sit and drain for as long as necessary.

Thanks for any insight in advance.

You’ll lose maybe a cup of oil, if that, when you swap filters. Only what’s in the old filter is what you’ll actually lose. Swap filters, let the truck run for a second to cycle the oil and then check the dipstick. Probably won’t even need to add anything.

Well, I've never changed just the filter, without draining the oil first (Basically backwards from the 'norm') ... but my best guess would be other than what drains normally (And off yer elbow) you're gonna get whatever is left in some of the upper oil galleys. I wouldn't think it would be all that much.... I'd just be careful, since you're just adding enough to fill the filter and whatever other oil drained out, that you're filling it up enough, or not over-filling it.

Not a problem. I used to change just the filter at 5K, then change oil and filter at 10K. Drove it that way for 9 years and 180,000 miles. At the time that meant a new filter about every 3 months and an oil change about every 6 months. For the last 5 years or so I'm only driving the Tacoma about 10,000 miles per year. I don't even watch the miles anymore and just do an oil and filter change every 6 months now.

    Stock for now.. maybe
Also a 3-5' fuel line can be helpful (if you didn't know already). Insert it onto the drain peacock in filter 'catch area?'. I use a small water bottle to catch the oil. I'd say way less than 12oz

Thanks for all the input. Changed the filter today, didn't change the oil. After running, I let the truck cool and oil drain out of the filter for about 30 min, unscrewed filter and captured about a half cup of oil out of the drain port and installed new filter. Easy and no mess at all. Replaced a quarter cup of oil and I'm goo to go.
