Oil drain plug gasket

I should have asked before now as oil is draining. The drain plug has a washer under the flange that is very thin without any type of flexible gasket, is there one or is mine just wore away? I'm not close to a Toyota dealer but does Napa or the other parts stores carry the sealing washer? Or isn't there anything but the thin alum washer? Thanks for the help.

usually there is a gasket with the filter if it is OEM
I usally buy them in packs of 10 and keep them in
the truck. I think you may find some thing to use
at the auto parts store.

 

Sounds like whoever did the last oil change did not use an OEM gasket on the plug. Thinking that if you are in a pinch you can reuse the washer this time and get some OEM gaskets for next time.

 

You can reuse it if you only want to do it once - some guys reuse them the entire life of the vehicle.

If it’s not sealing you can throw a little rtv in the threads and it will for sure seal until you buy one.

 

Its a crush washer that you would use with the oil drain plug. Typically blue and I believe its 12mm. I do believe any auto store should have them available. Part number

Take a close look. The fiber washer often can stick to the pan and remain there when you drain the oil. It might seal again as is, but I usually pull them off and flip them... or just use a new one.

 

There is no flexibility to the gasket.
It’s got a felt texture to it when new.

I reused mine more than once.

 

I reuse them a couple times then replace them. Never had one leak. Both my Yota and Honda use pretty much the same one, the Mazda doesn't use one, it's sealing surface is a wedge seal like a gas line fitting has.

 

What ever you do.... DO NOT BUY these... damn near shit my pants when I went to change my oil the first time after using one of these with how loose the drain plug was. Below was only after 600 Miles of use!

This. The first time I came across the OEM Toyota drain washer was on my wife's Prius (I didn't have a Taco back then). I thought the same - that whoever changed the oil the last time didn't use a washer. At the time I did it, I saw a "lump" at the drain hole, and poked at it and even pried (lightly) and it didn't budge, so I thought it was some type of bung for reinforcement around the hole.

I used a new washer at the time over what I thought was a bung. I then read on a Prius forum about how sometimes it's really hard to get the old washer off because the paper coating fuses to the oil pan.

SH*T...

Put the Prius up on stands again, and more forcefully pushed at the edge of the "bung," and it popped off.

The paper coating was so fused to the oil pan that I spent about 5 minutes carefully scraping the remnants off with a plastic putty knife.

Since then it still occasionally fuses, and I only use OEM gaskets, so it's not a matter of cheap aftermarket stuff.

Well I just reused the washer again with a little rtv. I will buy a few washers from the dealership next time I get over by them. Hopefully it won't leak and Ill be good until the next oil change. If it does, I will worry about it then. Thanks for all your help.

 

you know i like honda aluminum crush gaskets. on my drain plug. but have both

 

Recently ran into this issue. All I did was take a classic handle craftsman flat head and placed it parallel with the gasket then gave it a firm hit with a closed fist, it popped right off. Maybe try this first.

 

I use a small 1 foot PVC pipe and stab it until I make contact. It will knock the old aluminum crush washer off without damaging the oil pan. I make sure I put a little oil on both sides of the new washer to resist sticking next time.
