No magic here. Check the drain plug as-is for leaks around the gasket. If you don't see leaks, leave it. If you see leaks, drain the oil into a clean container and replace the gasket. I'd say odds are 70% you won't have a leak.

In the future use Dorman 12mm / 1/2" copper drain plug gaskets P/N 65271 (2-pack). These don't stick to the oil pan. It's available at most auto parts stores.

Have a buddy help you here.

Place oil pan under the truck.

Have clean rags on the ready.

Have new washer on the ready.

Loosen drain plug, but don't loosen completely.

With a plastic scraper, pop the old washer loose from the pan so it drops down against the drain plug.

Have your buddy ready to receive the drain plug w/ old washer.

Loosen drain plug completely with your dominant hand, and right as you pull it away from the hole plug the hole with a finger from your other hand.

Hand off the drain plug to your buddy to clean off and swap washers.

Buddy hands back the plug with new washer installed.

You lineup the drain plug to the side of your finger currently plugging the drain, and quickly swap.

Screw in the plug in, and torque to spec.

Check oil level amd adjust as needed.

    Done!

Shop vac hose on the fill port. Done it several times over the years on various cars to replace leaking and doubled up drain plug gaskets.

regardless of the risk for a leak being low, i believe in doing a job right especially one as important as an oil change and installing the drain plug.

no way i could live with that. i'd fix it with just one crush washer and try and salvage the oil so i could re-use it.

For God's sake, just drive the damn thing! It ain't gonna leak and you can correct it when you do your next oil change.

To the original poster, the exact same thing occurred with me and my 22 Pro. I have been keeping an eye on mine and have discerned no leaks. This appears to be a non-issue.

When I change the oil again, I plan on removing the extra washer.

HTH. Good luck with your Trail Edition.

How much is the oil worth compared to your engine if you don't notice a leak while your driving. Knowing that there are 2 washers on the drain bolt would bug the crap out of me. Do it right, drain the oil ,forget about it, pop the washer off and reinstall properly. So you waste $35 worth of oil,big deal, you did learn something about your truck, priceless.

I have found the toyota washers really stick to the pan. I was hoping it would get better with oil changes, but the 2nd one was just as stuck as the first.

If you are like the more, er...excitable... members here and won't be able to sleep at night without going to a lot of trouble and expense fixing a nonexistent problem, then you should by all means do so. Otherwise just check underneath for leaks, (there won't be any), a few times in the first couple of hundred miles and call it good.

For all the doomsayers, don't read the next part lest you have a stroke.:)

A few years back I did an oil change on my second gen and after buttoning everything up I found the drain plug gasket in the bottom of the drain pan. I thought about fixing it at first but decided just to keep an eye on it. In 5,000 miles, until my next oil change, I never lost a discernible amount of oil.

It seems like this mistake was more common than I anticipated lol....I did the same. I figured it fell into the oil drain pan after transferring it to another container to take it to recycle I noticed it wasn't there. Upon checking the drain plug I saw the new gasket over layed the old one. No leaks I will monitor next couple days but I think I should be fine and I'll fix the issue on my next oil change.

My oil drain plug crush washer just started to show some wetness. I noticed a small stain on my garage floor. Checked the torque and don’t want to go tighter so I put a piece of cardboard on my floor. Dipstick looks good so I will deal with the washer during my next scheduled oil change.

Just look for stains and check your dipstick regularly and you will be fine.

2 crush washers isn’t a big deal. It’s not like 2 filter gaskets on center threaded oil filters. It won’t leak. I’ve done it maybe 3 times. What I do now is drain the oil and when it’s through dripping take a 1 foot piece of pvc pipe and rub it over the hole. It will knock the old washer off without scratching the pan. Also I coat the washer with a little oil on both sides before installing it. It helps sometimes when removing it. Good luck.

No double washer. I believe the new washer is defective. I wonder in my case if 2 washers may have been a benefit.

    Working now a list
Check out Fumoto drain valve and you won't need drain plug gaskets.

No never had a drip before. Also just noticed the wetness around the drain plug 8 months after the oil was changed. Pan bolts are tight and the outside of the oil pan is clean so I know the leak is coming for the plug.
