    Hey guys,

I picked up a new 22 Tacoma Trail edition a couple months ago. Just did the first oil change today at about 1k miles. When I drained the oil I couldn't locate the crush washer. I thought it was odd that the factory wouldn't have installed one. So I put a new crush washer on the drain plug after I drained the oil. I now realize that the original crush washer was stuck to the oil pan. Now I have two crush washers installed.

Do you think having two crush washers could be an issue? I'm debating whether or not to drain the oil and install a single crush washer or just roll with two until my next oil change.

Thanks in advance for the feedback!

No worries, it won't leak. The nylon is soft and forms well. I've seen plenty with 2 and never leak.

The style you cant double are the metal crush style, you find them on the axles and transmission.

Thanks Bishop, pretty sure it's a coated aluminum washer.. I'll keep an eye out for leaks.

It's a blue nylonish fiber gasket from factory.

Always check the pan for the washer if Ya can't find it, I learned that working at the 76. I would do the oil change again, not even think about not doing it. My Taco is older and more miles, battle scared etc but I still would not even think about it. Just because... no need to change the filter. Price of a good night sleep?

I think it’ll be fine. Not sure how the techs feel about this, but what about draining in to a clean container and reusing?

I thought about doing this.. I'd have to pick up a new drain pan is the only thing.

lol I might just do it again.. that factory crush washer was really really stuck to the pan. I thought it must have been part of the oil pan!

Why not just pop the drain bolt out, remove the crush washer, pop the bolt back in, top off the oil. No reason to fully drain it.

I'd just drive it 'til I noticed a leak or 5k miles, whichever came sooner. Honest question- does anyone think that there's a real risk of the drain plug falling out or some other catastrophic failure related to this?

Is that in response to me?

if so yes. That’s why I said top it off with new oil when done. You know, to replace the stuff that comes out.

I may be off base, but I would bet that by the time one could remove the drain plug, peel the old washer off the pan, and tried to reinstall the plug, two things would happen: 1. Almost full drain. 2. A mess would result from trying to put the plug in while a full stream of oil is coming out.

Might as well go for full drain and no mess at that point.

My vote is to drive it as-is, assuming no leaks, and make sure 2 washers come off at next change. If it is leaking, full drain and fill is prudent. Too easy.

It’s honestly a good experiment. See if it leaks and you get some data about the gaskets. If it does leak, how much, enough to barley wet the ground? How does that affect the dipstick, how many miles? etc. If it doesn’t, that’s pretty interesting, I wonder why not, etcetcetc. If it’s leaking bad, that’s an obvious answer, you’ll have to change it.
