    Hello all,
New to forum, just purchased a new Taco, and did my first oil/filter change. I bought the correct Toyota filter kit, a couple 5 quarts containers of my favorite oil and the nice housing removal tool used in this video https://youtu.be/Hf5ZSkw1Vk0. Drove the truck on metal ramps. Plenty of distance between oil catch pan and drain plug. Add a bit of wind and what a mess :crapstorm:! Then mess two :crapstorm: when I placed the filter drain plastic under the housing. I am sure some of you experts found a much better way.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

BTW, the engine ran much smoother vs. the Toyota bulk oil that came with the truck.

Why using ramps? I didn't check but if I can't change the oil without ramps I will be pissed.

Well... it was the first time I changed the oil so I thought it might be a good time to look at the underbody. Probably can do without ramps next time.

Yup, even without ramps, the slightest breeze blows oil all over the place. Wish I could get my truck into the garage.

A Fumoto or Stahlbus drain valve can help because you can put a hose on them to direct the drain oil right into the tray. I have a similar valve for draining the filter housing too.

Thank you OldSchPumk. I used a Fumoto in the past but the flow was really slow. Looks like the Stahlbus flows faster. Will check it out.

Some will hate, but I vacuum the oil in all my cars, and then change the filters. Work’s incredibly well.

Put lots of cardboard down. Otherwise, use your neighbors driveway. :p

I have the Stahlbus. It ain't speedy but I can do things like checking the air filter or other things while it's draining.

I change my oil in the street in front of my house (low traffic residential neighborhood). When I am done there fewer oil stains on the street than underneath my neighbor’s junker he parks in the street.

next time you will know and use a big container to catch the oil from the filter. hands will get oily, wipes off.
the drain plug, once i brake it loose i put the container under the drain hole and from the side i loosen the drain plug and let it fall into the container. when i pour it off into gallon jugs i recover the drain plug. just my way.

Thats the hot setup, you need a large oil collection container. I found that out with my 1st oil change last fall. Some old towels come in handy to.

Don’t change the oil for 50,000 miles so it gets some weight to it forget about the filter it’s fine ,nice to have a 2,7 much better all around PLENTY of power down hill

    If it’s possible.
Get your truck setup the night before so you don’t have to start it.
Oil is so thin when warm it will splash just about anyway you try.

Never take that stupid center cap out of the housing.
Loosen the housing and let it drip for a couple of min.
Treat it like a regular oil filter.

I have found the oil can blow around too. I don't have a garage either. I just put down lots of cardboard. I usually save it in the basement from purchases like dishwashers so I have big sheets of it and use it a few times.
I use ramps too. I probably don't need to but it gives me a little more comfortable room to work and see under the truck.
I always make a little mess. The worst is I can never get the drain cap off the filter cover since the last free Toyota care service. It just turns the entire cover. So I can't use my fancy ass motivX filter drain thingy and not make a mess.

I had a fumoto valve on my Jeep Liberty CRD because the Aluminum oil pan was easily strip the threads on and yes they are slow but it gave me time to look at other maintenance issues while I waited.

I put a sheet folded in half under the drain plug and use the magnetic, flexible drain plug removal wrench from Craftsman after breaking it free. One of the best tools I have. No oil on my hands at all. I also put an old A/C filter in the drain pain so nothing splashes out. Works good for me.
