first time buying a brand new anything...few months ago bought a 2022 Tacoma and set up the 5,000 mile service and check. during the call the Toyota service guy said the oil is changed evy 10,000 miles due to the synthetic oil being used now a days.

not sure if I am too old school- other but older rigs I was changing oil every 5,000 miles and checking and probably adding some oil.
so the question is: is the Toyota service guy right? or do I need to be concerned?

The owner's manual says every 10,000 but I'll do mine every 8,000-9,000. I guess it's really up to you.

I just did my 60k change. Every 10k for me. No need to add any extra oil in between changes. No other known issues for me.

Allow me to save you some time reading responses. You will get:

-Toyota engineers determined 10K intervals are ok for synthetic so it’s ok.

-Changing oil more frequently than 10K is stupid.

-Changing oil at 5K is somehow better than 10K no matter what the engineers say.

-Change oil at 5K for no particular scientific reason, just makes you feel better.

I’m in the 5K camp and I have no logical explanation that’s backed up by scientific evidence. I will say that I tow and frequently drive short distances so perhaps there’s a good reason.

    Enjoy your truck!

My opinion is 10K under ideal conditions. Personally, I am 7-8K on changes. But it is whatever you feel good about. Lots of feelings on this board about oil...lol

Is completely up to you, the best is can say is that I do a 10k change. I've sent the oil out to blackstone labs for analysis and they said the oil was still good at 10k so thats good enough for me. If you want to do 5k do 5k, nothing wrong with that.

Don't forget that one nut job that will jump in and say that they filter and swap the oil at 1k intervals . . .

I started changing the oil on my 2018 Tacoma at 5,000 miles and then every 5,000 miles after that. Will do the same on my new 2022 Tacoma when it hits 5,000 miles. It's your truck, do what gives you peace of mind.

Yes, it's Friday. Seems like an appropriate time for an oil change thread. :)

I had my first oil change at 9,477 mi and my second at 19,511 mi. 10k is just wayyyy too much.

You would be best changing it every 5000 but no later than 7500, as 10,000 is the maximum.

Maximum as in perfect conditions, no idling, no traffic lights no hard acceleration. (as in a Sunday drive in the countryside)
Normal as in reality in life, you idle at red lights and punch it to get around idiots. (as in a regular drive on the road)

I like every 5K as I plan to keep the truck, plus its easy to see remember when its due,... 5000 - 10000- 15000 -20000.

I've used 10,000 mile oil changes for 225,000 miles. After 15 years it still doesn't use any oil, I have never added a drop of oil between changes.

This guy is at 1.5 million miles. He changes his oil once/month instead of keeping up with miles. But that works out to 8000-10,000 miles between oil changes. If that doesn't ease your mind nothing will.

This Toyota Tacoma Has Racked Up 1.52 Million Miles (motor1.com)

The original engine needed a head gasket at 880,000 miles. He decided instead of repairing it to put an engine in from a scrap yard. That engine had 100,000 miles on it at the time. That's 900,000 on one engine and 700,000 and counting on engine #2.

I’m sad to say I know precisely who that is. Maybe I need to lower my TW screen time.

Oops... 9,477 to 19,511 is 10,034 miles

In other news, I'm parting out my gently used 2020. I swear there's no engine damage from >10k oil change interval....

If only he’d used a 5K mile OCI that head gasket would’ve lasted way longer.

every 6 months, 5k miles, whichever comes first for me and my driving habits; which say this is around where the engine gets a little louder and idle is more ticky. Your oil collects the solids left after combustion that aren't burned off along with fuel residues (your oil smells like gas) from short trips and cold engines. both displace the oil by volume over time. a liter of 80% oil doesn't cool as well as a liter of 100%. with people driving less, cars are sitting longer and shorter drives means more fuel burped into the oil. could you go longer? techs say sure! but they aren't the ones footing the bill after the warranty ends.
gas is a solvent, oil lines and gaskets will tolerate it to a certain point but erosion is cumulative. cheaper to change the oil than engine service.

again my driving habits, which are mostly short trips in aggressive traffic with some 6k mile road trips sprinkled in there
