About ready to install my oil catch can but why is it needed? I understand the principle to capture the blow-by gases and oil particles that would go back into the intake but why not just put a hose to the ground from the PCV valve and plug the intake nipple coming from the PCV?
Is there a sensor that monitors dirty air from the PCV into the intake?
I was thinking to put a hose from the PCV into the oil catch can intake and leave open the out port. Also put a small K&N air filter to the intake nipple for clean air to be sucked in the intake.
Good? Bad? Why not? Have read a lot of the oil catch can principle but no info why not just discard the fumes.

It's really harmful to fish and such if you ever do any stream crossings while venting oil from a bypassed PCV system, catching it is a better idea if you want to alter that system.

You don't need a catch can. They are useless.

You need a catch can. They are extremely important and I can't believe Toyota didn't put it on stock.

Pick one. Either is the correct answer.

Snake oil, or they would be OE equipment. Engineers have over ruled the user!

Center console divider thingy, rubber bed mat and side steps for the wife.
My previous truck was a 2003 Ford SD Diesel.. Lots of guys put the catch cans on to get all that blow by out of the intake, created a messy intake. Some of them just routed a hose under the truck, only to find oil spray all over the underside of the truck. This is the real reason for the can.

Unless you have a turbo that is creating positive crankcase pressures and pushing oil where it shouldn’t go you don’t need it

Do this...Install your catch can, after 3k miles or so drain it. Then ask yourself if you would rather all the junk that drained to be routed back into your intake instead of your catch can? Catch can threads are like oil threads, you won't get "correct" answers and everybody and their Mother will have an opinion. It's best just to see for yourself!

Since 3rd Gens have both Direct and port injection systems, intake valves gumming up with the crap coming from the PCV valve is not as much a critical issue as DI only vehicles. That said, I've seen pics of the stuff the cans catch.. and understand why some would want them on their Taco.

Well said! I've had people tell me they aren't necessary but I must be crazy when I go to drain it then and a bunch of junk comes out...lol

Your truck won't explode without a catch can but it's just one of those piece of mind items, that's all!

I hear you, my truck was built a week or two before the start date for the Crank Position Sensor recall. Guess what I did anyway lol?

And don't forget the a/c drain mod... it also helps some people to sleep better at night.

    To protect people from themselves.

Oh, also so they can run a higher transmission case pressure for positive lubrication.

    Take your pick.

It's not so much the pros and cons I'm arguing. It's the logic you used to arrive at your conclusion...'because engineers'.
For the record I do not have one; for me the cons outweigh the pros.

Had one on my 2nd gen. I did see the crap & oil accumulate. Drained it every oil change. In the end i took it off. After driving with it for 20k or so miles, i really didnt care anymore. Plus if the lines and can arent air tight, your abs and traction light will come on....ask me how i know. If u want to use one, dont get a shitty one. Spend the $$ and get a decent one.
