Did a search and couldn't find a thread dedicated to Horsepasture Rd so I figured I would get one started with information about the area and for anyone that wants to organize wheeling/camping/hiking etc. Also could dump photos from this area into the thread for anyone interested in what it has to offer.

The Horsepasture has several entrances. The main entrance is in Sunset SC off of Hwy 178. On Google Maps it is titled "Foothills Trail Access A4" If you prefer an actual address it is 525 Moorefield Memorial Hwy, Sunset, SC 29685.

Another Entrance is off of Cleo Chapman Road https://www.google.com/maps/@34.972...4!1sbhP4XGU1qdskJ3H2xGlmIg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Part of the trail is open year round which will take you all the way up to Jumping off Rock which overlooks the Jocassee Gorges.

The remainder of the trails (Green Gates) are only open during certain parts of the year.
    They are OPEN September 15th - January 1st AND March 20th - May 10th
    [IMG]

Red gates are closed to all vehicle traffic. These are hiking trails and are open to FOOT TRAFFIC only.

The first 4 miles of the trail (section that is open year round) has been widened and smoothed by SCDOT in the last couple of years. Just about any 2wd vehicle can make it to that point. I've even witnessed a Honda Civic up there. Once you pass Jumping off rock, it starts to get somewhat steep and rough. (still not too bad) During the open times, you can continue past Jumping off rock and drive all the way down to Lake Jocassee. Perfect spot for swimming/fishing etc. The views from the overlooks are definitely worth the drive up. I have camped down by the lake several times. As far as I know, fires and alcohol are not allowed. There are also a couple of river crossings that can get deep depending on the amount of rain. Below are some pictures that I have taken over the years of visiting.

I hope this serves as a nice informative thread to help people get out there and enjoy the area.

Nice, yeah I've been wanting to go back. Just haven't made it yet. I'll go back to camp when it cools down a bit but always up for a ride.

Me, @JayDub and @BravesTaco went up one day. That's where that video came from. The other time I went up with a group was with Daria, SC2SC, Trey, a Vietnamese guy I can't remember his name, and maybe one or two other people. That was in my Prerunner, and I don't see it in any of the pics you posted.

I had created those threads for Horse Pasture, Chestnut Mountain, and Musterground in the Southeast section. They should probably all need to be moved to trails. :notsure:

Gee....i guess I missed this run.

    Edit: nm, old pics.

Also, should we add the sassafrass mt trail to this one since I don't think any of us have actually been on it?

It's just before Rocky bottom on the right on 178.
