Considering picking up a used Off-Road Pop-Up Camper/Trailer. Something like a Jayco Baja or other manufacturer equivalent.

Doe anyone have any suggestions/experiences to share (good or bad)?

Also looking for input, buying a 1990 jayco and wondering if anyone has had any negative experiences

We looked at the Jayco bajas but realized the tanks were too small for some of the trips we take. We ended up spending an extra 10k or so for a super plush new Grand Design. Plus larger loans 20k+ usually net you a longer term, if you need it.

Just got back from pulling a older pop up cross country,

what I learned, pop ups are designed to drive and park. They don’t like to travel. They slow down travel time, they make driving fun roads, not so fun. They make driving roads, suck. They rattle and shit comes loose.

When set up, great place to sleep and camp from.

we are looking at going with roof top tent set up, as we have a great camp set up for ground tenting.

    Welcome back to Maine!

My experience was the same with popups back in the 90's - early 2000's. They weren't mine, but were friends. We'd take them up to the NMW and it seems something was always coming loose and/or breaking just on the drive in in the forest/logging roads.

That's why I was asking about the specific off-road models. Seems like they're built better for such conditions.

Ya, thE off road builds have to be better than what I borrowed for the trip. Saw a few nice trailers on the drive, wished I had one instead, but don’t think I want to haul a trailer around again. We have great setup if we are setting up camp for a few nights, but hate doing all that work for one night. Some of the camp spots we wanted to get to, I know we couldn’t get to with the trailer we had, not sure how others would do.

I'm considering one for a few 5-7 day trips up in the NMW this fall for hunting trips. Most of those sites are pretty accessible. I don't mind tenting when just camping, but when hunting, not so much with all the additional gear.

Ya, that would make life easier. Drive up, quick set up, get up in morning, hunt, come back crash.

I had a trailer for a while, I’m not sure id do one again. You take a pretty significant hit to fuel range and capability. Even things like finding parking in town can be problematic

if I was gonna base camp for a week, I’d be more inclined to get a trailer again. I typically change locations every day or 2 so having something that’s quick to setup and tear down is way nicer. Plus I take way less junk with me when I don’t have all the extra space.

Ya parking was a pain at times, limited our activity when hauling. And this was during Covid times, can’t imagine during “normal”. We went to Sequoia NP, took about an hour to find a place to stash the trailer, so we could tour the park.
I like my sons idea, turn the truck into a transformer.

Nice setup, but I'm not dismantling/setting something like that up daily with the intention of staying in the same spot.

More than meets the eye, that looks like a big tent, do you know the dimensions?

That’s my concern with a roof top, we have been camping at Music festivals (16 years or so) and Moosehead area (at-least last 7 years) every year and a base camp has been our set up.

traveling this year, and the nights of landing in the Moosehead area, setting up the basics and then relocating in the morning, are the drive for something different.

How does it handle the bumps? How fast will you travel with it? Those NMW roads can shake the ship out of you on a good day.

It looks nice, bigger tire than I had. No idea on price, but easy to pull. We picked up a memory foam egg crate thing at Wally World to toss on the mattress, slept great.

It’s about 14 foot end to end inside. The overhang off the back is 7 foot or so
