What's your insurance look like? If its bad you might just be able to get it replaced with OEM glass - potentially deductible free. I've found your ability to articulate how bad your ability to see out the window goes a long way to glass repair shops going to bat for you when filing the paperwork...

I had a chip directly in my line of sight as a driver and I basically said "its right in my line of site, even if you fill the chip, its going to distract me" and insurance agreed and approved a full OEM glass replacement.

If you glass is bad enough and can explain it that way, maybe you can get some similar luck? Worth a shot...

I just had a windshield replaced the insurance paid around 525 with install and calibration threw safelight auto glass but it was after market glass . I don’t see much difference in oem vs aftermarket . Might save u some money if u went aftermarket . The price of that oem windshield is a standard price .

Keep in mind that Pilkington makes Toyota's glass, so a top of the line pilkington windshield might be a cheaper option than going directly to Toyota for glass.

Toyota sends out RFQ's to all big glass manufacturers, just like many other components. Lowest price that meets specs wins the business.
I would be idiotic for a company to only have one vendor and be held hostage on price.
Now, it might be a long term contract for 10 years but eventually that contract is up.
I have had Toyotas since 1984 and they have had all brands of glass.

OP, the difference between Safelite glass and other brands is not the quality, it's the business model of different companies. Quality is same.
Safelite has a business model of being a direct consumer replacement.
Pilkington and others have a business model of supplying directly to OEMs.
At the end of the day, the cost would be about the same for me and you.

Just curious as to how your windshield got sandblasted. Never heard of that before.

The only supplier I am aware of that supplies Toyota windshield's is AGC (they make pilkington), but I have never seen a Toyota replacement glass that wasn't marked pilkington. I replace a lot of glass and there certainly is a quality difference between a good brand name and budget glass so I would not throw caution into the wind assuming they all are the same quality.
All the glass on my truck is marked pilkington.

    100% agree

I've had a few windshields and side windows replaced. When contacting shops for quotes, I've always requested Pilkington, and if they can't supply that brand, I move on to the next shop.

There is absolutely a difference between brands. I've not only confirmed this with my experiences, but have had my opinion reinforced by the installers, who have agreed that Pilkington is superior.

All of my original Toyota windows and windshields have been branded "Pilkington" across multiple vehicles.

turn down the radio, get behind a semi in the passing lane (that's usually not supposed to be there in the metro) and you will hear all the sand, gravel, tootsie rolls wrappers, and used Jimmy hats, picked up by tires in the vacuum of the back of the truck, from where the shoulder and the retaining wall meet.

I had mine replaced after a quarter sized chip didn't seal properly and cracked that night. The crack was not in my line of sight, but it was still there. Insurance covered an OEM replacement though Safelite.

They also pointed out that there are only a handful of companies that even supply windshields. The only difference between the generic Pilkington one and the Toyota OEM one is that one says Toyota above the Pilkington logo and may come with the GoPro mount depending on your year. They also told me insurance generally won't cover an OEM replacement if the vehicle is older than 3 years. However, sometimes they'll tell insurance that's all they have if you request it and insurance will sometimes cover it.

Just a fyi to keep in mind, Safelite won't recalibrate the safety stuff if u have a lift. I had to go back to my dealer after the replacement. I understand why but makes no sense. The camera goes back in the same spot, doesn't even have to be unplugged. It a liability thing.

Hmm, they gave me a certificate of calibration when they redid my windshield a few weeks ago. All their ads emphasize they do it. Given the certificate, seems a lot like they’re willing to take on the liability.

FWIW my new windshield is branded FUYAO Made In USA. I can’t tell a difference from the OEM cause ya know, it’s a piece of slightly green glass on the front of a vehicle.

Carry full glass insurance, whether your state requires it or not. Mine does, $50 deductible for full replacement. Seems like a giant nothing burger of a thread.

I got that from driving in the desert and sometimes dump trucks carrying sand w/o a load cover.
