I have a guy willing to install the OEM Toyota Tacoma tonneau cover for $200. It’s coming off his 2017 short bed Tacoma. I have a 2022 TRD Off Road Tacoma short bed double cab. I shouldn’t have a problem with fit for this should I? Any reason not to purchase it? Seller indicates all the hardware is including and he would install it. I called the dealer and they said it would be $1,025 to install and I’ve been going back and forth on the Bakflip MX4 and Leer covers. Attaching a picture for reference!

Yes cheaper than Mx4, but not the quality. I have one on my 18, leaks bad. Fades/caulking out, need to constantly put protectant on it. Tried all different adjustments, can't stop leaks, and it leaks bad.

Those OEM tonneau covers are junk. They're too heavy and doesn't seal right, always leaks in the rain.
On mine the back by the tailgate lifts up about 1/2", no matter how I adjust it.
Go aftermarket, you will be much happier.

    Nothing yet
You have a brand new truck, get a new cover, and install it yourself. It really isn't hard, tons of youtube videos to help.
I have a cover i got for 150, and its great, and my bed is dry.

IMG_20210727_154026476.jpg My OEM cover is very nice, fit and finish to me is the best. The aftermarket ones just don't fit perfect enough for me. They are too square and don't conform to the lines of the bed. Mine leaks water in the tailgate when I wash it but that's the only place but I stopped that with some foam strips. I covered mine with a pro grade coating product I was given by a friend. Only wash it and nothing else.

No leaks whatsoever currently on my 2020 6' bed toyota tonneau cover. When it was brand new it had a couple spots on the driver side that let in a small amount of droplets when we had severe thunderstorms, or a hurricane. The second year all has settled in well to seal those spots leaving the insides perfectly dry. I just wish the rubber smell from the bed mat would go away.

I realize it won’t be 100% waterproof but rather water resistant but so many people who say yes then others who say no! It’s hard to decide. But $200 is worth a shot. I did get tonneau cover cleaner and also weather strips. I’m going to see if that’ll help.

He would have to swap bed caps with you, but install is super simple. So is the dealer wanting $1000 just to install his cover or a new aftermarket cover? Dealer will absolutely not sell you this cover unless you are in Canada.

I would make sure you’re dedicated to having this cover before going through with it. I had the factory cover and transitioned away from it. Personally, I’d rather have a shell than a tonneau. The issue is that the bed rail protectors (the plastic trim on the top rails of your bed) have to be notched to accommodate the cover. They come like this from the factory but I’ve seen some people make their own (looks terrible). This seller is likely going to switch your brand new rail protectors for their used, notched protectors.

If you really want a tonneau, I’d do it right the first time and get a Diamondback: https://diamondbackcovers.com/produ...MIua667YuP9AIVAz6tBh35kApoEAAYASAAEgJ_ZvD_BwE

He agreed to swapping bed caps with me. The dealer wanted to charge $1000 for both the install and the tonneau OEM Toyota cover.

Are you in Canada? That’s the only place I know of that it is sold by a dealer. The OEM tonneau cover isn’t available in the USA as a kit like it is in Canada. To buy it in parts is something like $2k in parts alone. It’s pretty ridiculous. They were probably just gonna put an aftermarket one on your truck for $1k.

Only way to get it new for cheap in the USA is to get it with it on the truck when you buy the truck from Toyota. Used is the other option.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they were trying to pull a quick one on me. I specifically said OEM Tacoma tonneau cover and he said they come out of Portland and they’re the OEM ones. I ended up getting this gently used one and it’s actually in real good shape! I’ll upload a photo in the AM.

My Limited came with the factory tonneau cover. Yes it leaked. Took it off and sold it. Put on a LowMax tonneau and very happy with the look..

Bought my LOMAX tri-fold from a vendor here for $650 and installed it myself in maybe an hour.

I still have my factory bed rails so if I remove the cover, the truck will be stock.

If you buy this used cover and decide you don’t like it, good luck getting your factory rails back. You’ll be forced to use only the Toyota cover because your swapped rails will have cut outs that’ll leak with anything other than OEM.

My advice is to spend the extra $450 and buy a new LOMAX. If you had an older truck, I’d say go for it, but putting an old faded cover on a new truck (and one you can’t easily switch back from) just makes little sense to me.

    Completely agree with Ryeguy.

I had the OEM and it’s heavy and doesn’t fold all the way up. I did the same thing, snagging a LoMax for that price, probably from the same vendor. 100x better. Looks so clean, it’s low profile, folds all the way up when I need the full bed, and isn’t a third as heavy as the OEM. Spend the extra $$ for your truck. It’s a well worth-it investment.

I disagree oem covers are junk. Properly installed they seal near water tight.....mine actually got better after a year as far as sealing. You cannot find a drop water anywhere no matter how hard it rains now. Another thing maybe its the trucks build, and not the covers fault if not sealing well.
The only remaining issue with these oem covers i have is the external quality of material used. So far 0 complaints. Dealer did supply me with a bottle of wolfstein protectant to apply when needed.
