Hi there, I have a 99 Xtracab with a few blown out original speakers. Do any of you have recommendations for a replacement setup that has worked well for you? There are so many options and I would love to know where to start. Any options that require no cutting the plastic and are on the simpler side would be awesome. Thank you all!

This is the door style for refernce:

The ones I installed in 2012 (or 2014?) have been great. Polk Audio db651s (The ‘s’ denotes shallow depth)

One thing to note is that you need shallow depth speakers for the fronts. Otherwise you need to modify the mounting bracket.

There are quite a few things that go into achieving better sound:

    1. Speaker quality
    2. Head unit (stereo) quality
    3. Simple/effective sound deadening in the doors.
    4. Amplification of the stereo’s output (eg adding an amplifier)
    5. Running new/larger gauge/better quality speaker wire from the head unit to the speaker rather than using the existing OEM wire/harness.

use Crutchfield.com as a valuable resource about what head units and speakers fit your truck.

This is super valuable information. I really appreciate it! I'll look into those Polk speakers for the front door. Would the standard non-shallow fit in the rear speaker area?

Ya if you get 6x8 speakers you’ll probably have to cut out some of the mounting bracket but honestly it’s worth it if you’re upgrading and it’s not that hard. It’s just hard plastic. Pretty easy with a dremel. I wouldn’t sacrifice performance for ease of installation in this case. Either way, there’s plenty of options whichever way you go.

I just decided yesterday to upgrade my OEM speakers so I'll be following this thread. I have tweeters in my doors so I need to find a setup that works with that.

Currently I have a Kenwood head unit that I installed about 5 years ago. It's connected to this powered sub that fits under the drivers seat. It all works really well and sounds great but I think it would really benefit with new door speakers.

    And yes. Crutchfield.

I'm a music nerd so I want my music to sound good. I'm not necessarily going for full on audiophile quality, but it needs to sound good.

Crutchfield x 10. I purchased a kenwood receiver and kenwood speakers that matched the output of the head unit. It won't blow the windows out, but I'm already hard of hearing. It sounds great, especially since I sound proofed the door skins. But like others have already stated, Crutchfield is your friend.

Same here I went with Crutchfield awhile ago, got a head unit with Apple play and speakers that matches with outputs and size, they send you a fitment kit for the speakers too, pretty easy install too.
