I have the dreaded rear seal leak and need new brake shoes in the process. I have scoured the forum and found a ton of helpful info. However, part #04495-35230, rear brake shoe kits appears to be discontinued, per Toyota parts deal website.

So, what brand and part number do you all use for replacing rear brakes on your Tacoma.

    For reference, mine is a 1999 extended cab SR5 TRD 4x4 3.4.

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Rick,
OEM rear brake shoes are not discontinued, just not available from that vendor at this time. They are currently available at McGeorge/Ourisman Toyota: 1987-2003 Toyota Drum Brake Shoe 04495-35230 | McGeorge Toyota Parts (ourismantoyotaofrichmond.com). Most here including myself are using high quality aftermarket rear brake shoes as are available at RockAuto, etc.. I have a set of new OEM rear brake drums arriving from toyotapartsdeal today, so will probably be doing a full rear brake job tomorrow using the set of Raybestos Element3 rear brake shoes I keep on hand as spares.

Try a different Toyota dealer. Must be thousands of them in the U.S. Whatever you do, just make sure you use Genuine Toyota Parts from a dealer when ordering the brake shoes.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

Why is it necessary to "make sure" to use Genuine Parts from a dealer when ordering brake shoes?

Toyota brake shoes/pads are nothing special. There are plenty of as good or better options out there.

After replacing the shoes with less expensive parts, I had problems with the e-brake adjusting itself too tight.

Bummer to hear about the axle seals.

Couple links I hope will help ya. They have links to all the parts, as well as step-by-step instructions with photos on the rear axle seal job and replacing the rear brake shoes. And of course, shout as you have questions...

Thanks for the help. I have already devoured these links and have created a list of parts.

I've also spent way too much time the last couple of days on adventure taco. Amazing stuff. I thoroughly enjoy your trips.

Any decent parts store shoes would be fine.

Drum brakes are usually pretty agreeable, you can reuse drums, the only time they usually make noise is when they're out of adjustment or soaked with gear oil

When it comes to quality parts for our Tacos, it's pretty hard to argue over anything other than the price of OEM parts. Toyotapartsdeal shipped this set of 42431-35210 OEM drums for my '97 V6 Taco 4x4 to my door for $280, which I consider money well spent because I see added value. Toyota quality is why I/we bought our 1st Gen Tacos in the first place.

My truck doesn't have ABS. Will I still need the ABS tone rings (Skid Control Rotor)? I have no idea if the axle comes equipped with the rings as standard.

You should not need the ABS tone rings. They shouldn't be on your truck since you don't have ABS

Thank you. Wasn't sure if it would be on there regardless to provide necessary spacing or whatever. $110 saved.

Check this link out. This website is phenomenal. It can help you see interactive parts diagrams for any vehicle, and you can click on the parts to get parts numbers.

Used it to verify that a '99 SR5 4x4 Tacoma wouldn't have ABS and wouldn't have an ABS tone ring.

Yep if you had abs....there's the tone ring and an extra lock ring needed....
so it would be different on the axle and hub flange to accommodate that extra space needed..

IF you dont have the sensor going into the back hub....you dont have abs...

they could of eliminated the abs system under the hood if somehow went south in the past....but the sensor hole would still be there..

    pictured here..

Timmy has three different super important videos on how to do this right...

Toyota changed that inner seal back a few years ago.....and then the repairs were starting to leak again in less than 20K......so its super important to study those...... both of those videos..

Mines got the 'Mr coffee mod' ....and its nearing the 20K mark now...

others here said its wacked.......we shall see.....bitches...

AS these 1st gens slip into super seniors....these differentials are becoming Unobtainiam....

late time I priced one for mine.....they were like $1200 to $1500 for a salvage one.....
and thats the simplest rear wheel drive one....

so when you buy one of these tacos/4runners.....I'd change the fluid ....soon......

and then to MAX life the seals...which is about $1000+ job at the dealer....

I'd rechange the fluid again in 6 to 12 months........

to try to get as much crud and metal flakes out as possible......but everybody just pretty much blows me off....

'we aint got time for that'........yeah buddy....

remember you hoping for long life on that drive shaft seal tooooooo...

And I dont trust dealers.......there's no way they're gonna flip that ring.....
they're hoping to see you again........but after the service wty coverage is out...

There's one catch/caveat to this. If your truck is a TRD Off-road (has an e-locker), then it will have the ABS tone ring regardless of an ABS controller (and sensors, etc.) being installed. You still don't need new tone rings (you never really do, I've always reused mine), but you might find them in there.

While I agree with your sentiment about dealers, and I understand the reasoning behind flipping the retaining ring (and I did it on my truck), the more I've thought about it, the more I think it's both unnecessary and probably not the right thing to do. Probably won't hurt anything to do it, but not all that important, either.ff
