True words... this is a long coming worldwide issue. Biggest issues we are going to have for a LONG time if not forever... gas prices have gone way up. This has made everything go way up. Tertiary problem, now everyone's salaries/hourly wages have gone up. Fast food workers are getting starting pay of $20-22... fast food workers! They were getting $8/hr pre-pandemic in some areas of the nation. Who thinks they will ever go back to that wage.... hah.

This is the new reality and it was a long-time coming....

According to the Car Care Nut, AZ designates a 'value line' part that Toyota makes. These are not the same grade as what was installed at the factory.

That is the Advic/Akebono difference I was talking about. The more expensive ones are the ones that last forever and are Advics like @mattleg said. The AZ pads are the “budget” pads from Akebono I believe.

Normally, I like to stay with OEM but had a vibration so I went with PowerStop. Very happy with how they stop and will have to see how they last. Looks like Amazon dropped the price for front rotors and pads since I bought mine in June.

I think that puts an end to any question who make the OEM pads.

Well sort of, My third Gen 4Runner has Denso spark plugs in one bank and NGK in the other. Many other TR4 members had the same thing. Point is they are both OEM manufacturers of brake linings for Toyota. One year, you mighty have one, one year you might have the other. OR maybe the front are Advics and the rear are Akebono. Oooh, I know what I'm doing this afternoon......

The Akebono pads I used on my old 2nd gen a few years ago outlasted everything else I had tried.

I'll never use aftermarket pads. Always had bad luck with them chattering when coming to a stop. Some are even worse making grunting sounds when applying the brake. They never got better either. Swapped over to oem, and perfect. Its good to hear you have good luck with these.

For me it seems clear that the ADVICS are what were OEM on my truck by the part number and that the AZ pads are a cheaper pad made by Akebono, but you bring up a solid point on the plugs. There was only 1 part number for the plugs, but there sure were two different plugs from the factory and we can't blame that on the Mexicans since the 4R is made in Japan. I wonder is Toyota would use the same part number if the supplier changed? That is usually when you get a superseded part number
