Why did Toyota decided to stop producing mufflers for our trucks? Anybody have any info on this? It blows my mind that I can’t get a OEM muffler for my 2nd Gen. There is still a ton of these trucks on the road.

It doesn’t seem discontinued. Are you sure it’s not just on backorder?

For something like a muffler, does OEM make a big difference? Or can you get some Dorman replacement?

as long as the volume is similar it will work great. I learned this from a very trusted exhaust guy around here who was able to make this even better by tucking it for more clearance.

From a sound and exhaust flow standpoint, aftermarket (Wagner, etc.) will probably be just fine. The big difference will be in how they're finished and that directly relates to how long they will last. Up here in the rust belt, it's not at all uncommon to get over 10 years and well over 100,000 miles out of an OEM system. Replace that with an aftermarket (steel) system and you won't get even half that. As for Dorman parts, don't even get me started.

The P/N 174300P010 is shown as "no longer available" on Toyota's web site, but you can still order it from many dealer web sites, for example:
    https://parts.lakelandtoyota.com/p/TOYOTA__/Exhaust-Muffler/3915886/174300P010.html
    https://parts.longotoyota.com/oem-parts/toyota-muffler-and-tail-pipe-174300p010
    https://toyotaparts.bochtoyotasouth...unner-fits-2005-2012-toyota-tacoma-174300p010
(I'm assuming they have it available. Otherwise there's no point in offering a 20% off discount...)

Is the piping rusted? If not, just buy an aftermarket stainless muffler and have it installed by an exhaust shop. Probably cheaper than paying $440 plus shipping.

like others have said, if the muffler blows out, im just going to chop it off and go blow $40-$100 on a decent muffler and take a trip to the local exhaust shop to have them weld on a new muffler and ive been told now by a few friends that a 2.5in muffler slips over the oem piping fairly well

Aftermarket does not last long in the rust belt. Walker is by far the worst.

I'm also looking for either a 17430-0P010 or the TRD PT910-89061. Lots of places list them, but most say backordered or NLA. If anyone has either, new or like new used, please let me know. Thanks! I'm trying to avoid aftermarket (two or three year mufflers in the rust belt).

Curious as to why you don't want to go aftermarket? A quick internet search puts a TRD exhaust at around 350 to 950$ depending on where you get it from and if new or used. Or you could go the route of one of many aftermarket mufflers for example and pay an exhaust shop to bend and weld you up something comparable for the low end of that spectrum. I think I spent about 100$ on top of the muffler (and resonator) on the install at the shop that welded up mine. It was a complete assembly from the Y-pipe back. I didn't spring for an exhaust tip since my exhaust is turned down over the rear axle.

Why? Well, I have had factory exhausts last 15-20 years. Walker, Maremont, AP….rust in just a few years. Never had luck with aftermarket exhausts. Other than the Cherry Bombs I put on my Mustang 30 years ago.

I can see your point. I'm at about 11 years on this after market exhaust and the welds are showing signs of rust and pitting while the tubing is showing discoloration due to road debris but zero observed exfoliation in the metal. It must be said that my truck has only spent 1 winter north of the rust belt but I'm sure I'd be having similar results as you had if it spent more time in the salt. When it does come time to replace my exhaust, I'll be sure to size the intake and exhaust of my resonator and muffler so that I don't have additional weld seams due to the step-up and step-downs the shop had to use.

Thanks for the reply. My truck spent its early life in Pennsylvania and now Maryland (Maryland uses salt and magnesium chloride on the roads).
I had an 84 F250 years ago that got a new Maremont muffler every year. But my 99 F150 original muffler lasted until just a few years ago, about 20 years. Stainless steel oem exhaust.
Around here, stainless is the way to go, and oem.
Trust me, I hate the thought of spending almost $500 on a muffler and tailpipe but I hate replacing them every year or two even more.

Facts! Also for folks that do not want a weird sounding exhaust, OEM does a great job of muffling out unwanted exhaust note.

I just got lucky and got one at my local dealer. It is so quiet now, I had no idea that my truck was so loud. super easy install. The dealer said there are over one hundred on back order in the system.
