    Hello everyone,

I’ve been looking to replace my fog light bulbs with a switchback white/amber LED. The only ones I have found are for the normal OEM housing and not the LED housing in the OEM LED package.

Does anyone know of a brand that will?

    Thanks

I think Cali Raised has something you're looking for, color-changing fog lights depending on the sequence of how you turn then on/off

The sealed OEM LEDs do not have a changeable "bulb". Additionally, any drop-in LED is likely going to be trash in a halogen housing with poor output characteristics.

What are you trying to achieve with a switchback? Maybe unfair, but I'm going to assume that you're after the different looks is all? I have solutions for you to be able to upgrade your fog lights where you "technically" could swap between white and yellow, but it wouldn't be cheap nor quick to swap.

I just want the option to have amber if needed. Not too worried about looks. I got caught in some fog at night up on a trail and I only have white lights right now.

I have some ditch lights on the way, but wanted to see if there was an option for the dogs as well. The ditch lights just come with an amber cap. So, I have white for most the time and can make them amber when needed.

    what’s your option?

I was ignorant to fact that they are sealed. So, that changes my search as well.

Okay, PERFECT. Now that I know you're after them for the proper reasons we can make some headway here! :bananadance:

    So I have a few questions -
    • What didn't you like about your white fog lights in the fog? Were you dealing with too much reflection? Just not bright enough, or you felt as though they weren't cutting through very well?
    • How do you use your fogs? Do you leave them on all of the time?
    • If you had markedly better performance from your fog lights, and you actually used them in poor light situations would you be vehemently opposed to running yellow all of the time?

There was way too much reflection. All I could see was a white wall. I ordered the ditch lights for trail purposes, but they aren’t street legal. Enter my fog light search.

Most of the time white is fine, but I want a street legal option for when the weather does get crappy. I stumbled on to the switchback option which I liked because it gave me both options.

They are set to come on when my headlights come on. I like having that little bit of extra visibility. Lots of deer where I live and the factory headlights are very narrow, and there aren’t many street lights in my area.

I wouldn’t be opposed to amber all of the time, but I would like the option.

So there's a few things here, but I think we're on the right path!

If you would like to have your brain melt with raw data there's a lot of info contained HERE and HERE

Long story short there's a handful of things that you want a fog light to do. Stay low, spread wide, and have minimal uplight. Selective yellow output color is going to have better perceived characteristics with cutting through foggy conditions as the lesser energy color temperature reflects back in the user's face less. The current best performer on the market is the Diode Dynamics SS3. They have different different colors and power levels depending on your needs/wants, but all are street legal when aimed properly and provide excellent width. I'm not sure where you live, but if you ever get snow you'll want at least the pros as they will get warm enough to melt snow/ice. I do sell these and the best seller is by far the yellow/pro/SAE fog combination.

The yellow lights come with a 4000k LED emitter behind them so what I was alluding to when I said that you "could" switch from yellow to white would mean a lens swap on them. Not necessarily quick or easy, but certainly doable.

As for your ditch lights I am not sure what you picked up, but you're not going to want to run them in the fog either. You'll have a ton of light reflected back in your face. However, in clearer conditions an A-Pillar mounted light can be a great addition to the overall lighting package.

He has sealed beam LED housings. That's not gonna work.

I don’t have the pro, but I have the oem led package. I was originally looking for something like that, but they don’t work with the led package. Right?

Yes you are correct. I didn't see that you had the OEM light package on your Tacoma.

I have been looking at the ss3 as one of my ditch light options. They had the option of the click on amber covers. I haven’t clicked order yet, but I was comparing those with the combo pattern and the rigid dss pro light in the fog configuration.

what’s your opinion between the two? Do you sell the mounting kit with the a-pillar brackets and harness? I keep going back and forth between the two but thought I had made up my mind because the rigids have a side shooter feature.

Yup I sell it all! Brackets, lights, etc.

I think that the Rigids are good, but here's the only reason that I don't like side shooter type lights mounted on the A-Pillar (Baja Designs LP series, Rigid D-SS, etc) and I am even sometimes a little hesitant to even recommend a combo pattern on a ditch light. I am very against hood splash. On darker colored vehicles it isn't as prevalent, but on like a white rig if you have something pouring light onto your hood a lot of your focus will be there limiting your downward visibility where you need it. The D-SS for example will have 50% of it's side shooter capability littering your visibility with hood reflection. People have different gauges as to how much this impacts their driving experience.

Since I am guessing that you re not going to be running a light bar a this time I am going to recommend a combo pattern SS3 to help fill in some of that mid-ground lighting. Otherwise, I would recommend a driving pattern.

Where I like a light similar to the D-SS is mounted just below the hood line on an aftermarket bumper for example to make full use of the width of their beam without impacting my own ability to see.

I’ve been looking at a center mounted bumper and it will hold a 20” light bar, but it doesn’t have any mounts for additional lights. I’m not ready to do a full bumper replacement yet. Which is why I like it.

So even though the side shooter is only on the side of the light facing away from the car it will still give kick back on the hood? This is why I’m having to take so much time. You can’t really tell all of this in videos and pictures online.

What do you sell the ss3 kit for?

I just had re-acclimate myself with the D-SS offerings, and I didn't realize that they now had a single-sided option. That would certainly be better than what I alluded to before.

I don't sell a ton of Rigid stuff, but I could certainly get that for you too. I definitely recommend the driving pattern if you decide to proceed with the D-SS as you'll get some of that downward visibility that you'd need!

As for the fog light kits/pricing/etc you can check that all out HERE. We won't charge you shipping or tax on a fog light kit like that either.

As for the ditch light kits we have preassembled Diode Dynamics ones HERE. If you decide to go with something like the D-SS as your ditch light though we can put you together a specific quote.

Just make sure to shoot us a message either here or on the website so that we don't lose track of you though. It gets easy to lose track of a TW thread here.

    Thanks. I’ll check it out.
I was wanting the driving combo for the rigids. I just didn’t like the price difference for different lense.

At what angle would I have to mount the SS3 pod in order for it to light up what is to the left or right if the front end of my truck?

I’ll get to your pm tomorrow! The pod will do all of the work to tackle the left and right so you can aim them straight ahead!
