Installed my Toyota genuine bed cover today and it’s really nice quality. If anyone is debating which cover to get you can order this one right from your dealer. Easy install super high quality.

That looks really good. Did you have any trouble finding it. I went to my local dealer looking for a couple parts and she just laughed when she saw what the availability was.

Ordered from Toyota Genuine parts and had it delivered to local Dealer. It took 2 weeks, but worth the wait. Easy install, fits perfect, and retains factory side rails.

Do you have to move siderails down with a bracket like the bakflip? Supposedly the oem is just a rebranded version

That's what I have. It's quality, it fits, no modifications needed, auto tailgate opens & closes with no problem, no leaks. I highly recommend it.

The Toyota cover is made by BAK industries, the MX4 model.Better off buying it from BAK it is a little cheaper and has a lot better warranty at 5 years vs 1 or 3 years when buying from Toyota

Have you been keeping up with the MX4 threads. They are all and I mean all not fitting properly and folks are sending them back. If they are actually made by Bakflip (no one really has facts) they are NOT THE SAME. the OE ones are fitting no problem. the MX4 is having nothing but problems.

I think the Worksport AL3 pro is a nice cover for half the price of the oem ,uses the existing rails, does not need drain tubes and has a 3 year warranty and very low profile.

It does mostly look like a BAK MX4, but there are some differences. Maybe it could be a modified version made for Toyota. Based on these differences, I ordered the OEM Toyota cover (PT954-35240) a few days ago. Dealership says it will be in on AUG 7.

PT954-35240 - Hard Tonneau Cover - Standard Bed (arrival 8/7)
PT989-35245-03 - Trailhunter ARB Rear Tow Hooks (arrival 9/2)
PT226-35241-AA - Trailhunter Axle Dump Trail Pipe (arrival 8/11)

Depends on when / where you buy. Mine was $1100 from local dealer and I think @Gfenza89 got his for $900 or so. Sometimes Toyota Parts has sales. I personally think the OEM looks the best and its Toyota, so I feel the quality will be better.

Installed yesterday within a few hours. Instructions from @Brentbba were helpful as I couldn't find anywhere else. I've attached them here as well. The instructions do leave out several details that aren't really explained such as where do the felt pads go and exact front / aft alignment of the rails (just says push them against front bulkhead). Long story short, if you just leave all hardware slightly loose until bed cover is installed and laid down, you can "jiggle" the bed cover into a straight / flat position where everything clicks in and tighten it all down.

I only had one strap handy. Don't judge me.

    IMG_5993.jpg

The rails came with these little sticky foam pieces haphazardly installed. Put them where I thought they should go...
    IMG_5994.jpg

The little plastic insert in the rails is a slide insert. You can leave it in and simply slide the rail to the side to disengage after removing all of the bolts. It is nice because it holds the rail up after bolt removal. I simply left mine in, no need to remove.
    IMG_5995.jpg

I ended up placing the foam pieces around the corner which sealed the light bleed that some have mentioned
    IMG_6003.jpg

My two outer drain holes are spaced correctly. Yay, I got a Tuesday truck!! The tubes extended about 6" below the bed, so I just trimmed them after routing.
    IMG_6008.jpg

When it comes to installing the 4ea front bolts, put a piece of duct tape across both bolt heads to keep them from spinning. Fold the cover all the way up like this and you can simply reach around the cover to hold the bolt down in one hand while installing the hardware with the other. Only tighten them a little more than hand tight then lower the cover. I pushed my cover all the way toward the window and jiggled it to make all latches line up evenly from side-to-side.
    IMG_6009.jpg

Made sure the tailgate end was even side-to-side and that when closed, only one or two rubber flaps were compressed. Lowered the tailgate, crawled under the cover and tightened up the 4ea bolts in the front. Did not need to hold the top as they were tight enough due to lock washer compression and rubber discs that they did not spin and tightened easily.
    IMG_6024.jpg

Opened and closed the cover several times to ensure good fitment / latching.

    IMG_6027.jpg

    IMG_6023.jpg

Love the prop rods. Only concern is that the plastic clip that holds them to the rail may eventually break. Removed all of the stickers and the "person stuck in the bed" pull so nothing I put back there can get out.

The OEM cover is made by BAK (I confirmed this with them). It’s is essentially a variant of the Gen3 taco MX4 with some mods to make it OE compliant.

BAK redesigned the MX4 for the 2024 Tacoma. I ordered and installed one but sent it back due to a water leaking into the cross supports and pouring all over the contents of the bed when opened during or after rain/car wash. I replaced it with the OEM cover which keeps the bed completely dry.

    New MX4 Pros:
    1. much easier to remove/reinstall the cover if you need to remove it
    2. Front retention thru-bolts eliminated (cleaned look and less likely to leak perhaps)
    3. lighter (which could also be a con)
    4. adapter rail is cut to clear bed texture
    5. clean rear corner covers
    6. Better support props than OEM (in my opinion)
    7. 5 year warranty

    New MX4 Cons:
    1. leaks terribly at cross supports - collects in underside and pours out when you open the cover
    2. Finicky brackets between adapter rail and bed rails
    3. No longer drops accessory rail so you lose the ability to slide accessories into that rail and lose a significant area of the rails to the brackets
    4. Design error in front bracket requires alternative bracket location (works fine but annoying especially when they forgot to include the instructions addendum

    OEM Pros:
    1. Seals work
    2. Rail drop for full use of accessory rail
    3. Heavy duty (compared to the new MX4)
    4. Slightly longer preventing leaks at front
    5. Clamps down on notoriously loose plastic bed top cap
    6. Can get on sale for ~$700-$800

    OEM Cons:
    1. More difficult to remove/reinstall if you need to take off the cover (something I never personally need to do)
    2. Rail seal overlaps bed texture - thought it might cause leaks but so far it’s not
    3. Can’t use OEM bed divider with bed mat
    5. Finicky support props (cover “floats” on prop rods instead of the MX4 design where you can preload the cover propped against the truck).
    6. 1 year warranty, 3 years if installed by Toyota ($$)
    7. Emergency escape handle is annoying (I cut mine off)

I am 100% happy with OEM despite some of the cons. Hoping that BAK refines the MX4 design to at least improve the leaks. MX4 has always been my favorite cover. So glad that the OEM is made by BAK!

A lot of good info on the Tacoma4g. My pics/videos of the MX4 issues can be found here:

My local dealer (and many others) have an online parts website. They almost always have most items on sale. On top of that Toyota every few months does 20% off sales (last was July 4 sale). The discount is a combo of the dealer discount plus Toyota sale.

I buy all parts on my local dealer’s parts site and pick up in store to avoid shipping. What’s funny is they can’t price match their online store if you try to order in store.

The cover is currently on sale for $1017 at my local dealer’s online store:
