Hello first time poster long time Tacoma owner, 2001 REG cab 4x4 2.7l MTM. I have been using akebono pads and i like them being one of Toyota’s suppliers. But recently i have been researching OEM pads. https://parts.toyota.com/ is showing three active part numbers excluding SUMITOMO 04465-35280 which looks to be discontinued.

0446504050 is an active part number and from the picture looks to have SUMITOMO makers mark on it and has an FF edge code rating and costs $104.50 Why so much more? Ceramic? semi Metallic?

04465-AZ103 is an active part number and from the picture is made by Advics/AISIN and has a EF rating and costs $55.00

04465AZ005 is active but unknown but claim to be ceramic and costs $55.00

I was wondering what OEM pads you all are using, and if you think there is a difference in pad construction in the range of OEM part numbers.

    Thank you for your time
    Alex D

I usually buy Genuine Toyota Parts and around 15 years ago I put a set of them on my truck and have had no problems. Now they are getting too expensive for the driving I do so I am looking for a less expensive replacement. Anyone have any experience with Advics AD 0799 Premium brake pads from Rockauto? I need new pads and the ones from Toyota are too expensive for me. I'll be driving just around town with 2 or 3 trips to the Utah/Nevada deserts each year and am thinking that those should be enough.

That link is very helpful. Thank you for posting it! :)

I still would like opinions on the Advic pads though.

I wonder if advics/AISIN may be using more modern friction blends in there pads. Assuming that older suppliers of toyota are still using original (recipe) that's over 20 years old in most cases, not saying that's necessarily a bad thing if it works.

" The engineering that goes into ADVICS ultra-premium brake pads has taken original ceramic friction technology to the next level, resulting in increased stopping power and overall performance."

to bad i cannot find a picture of them that shows the edge code

Wow, this is a great first post! I don't have answers but I liked all the info you compiled and stuff. And sumitomo makes the OEM lower ball joint too, i believe
Edit: I was corrected, Somic makes the OEM lower ball joint.

Actually it's Somic who makes the LBJ's.

That sounds better, I thought the 'somi' part phonetically sounded right. Thanks for correcting

Toyota's other OEM brake supplier is Akebono so if you want OEM you have that as an option as well.

Toyota uses various suppliers and/or plants and/or friction materials at various times. Here is a list of currently available brake pads from Toyota for the 1995-2004 Tacoma 4WD and Pre-Runner:

    04465-04050 - Advics PS558H Made in USA
    04465-35240 - Akebono AK533 Made in Japan
    04465-35280 - Sumitomo PS534 Made in Japan

04465-AZ103 - Advics VC063 Made in Japan, Alternative MVP (Market Value Pricing) option, not factory brake pads, but still good, modern friction compound
04465-AZ005 - Made in USA, Earlier MVP option, includes shims, I've seen many complaints with these pads and would not recommend them

Former part numbers (not exhaustive, no longer available):
04465-04010 (Replaced by 04465-35080) - Sumitomo PS534 Made in USA
04465-35080 (Replaced by 04465-35280) - Sumitomo PS534 Made in Japan
    04465-YZZ10 (Replaced by 04465-YZZA6) - MVP
    04465-YZZA6 (Replaced by 04465-AZ005) - MVP
