Hey all, long time lurker. I have spent years looking for a way to take an entune 3.0 head unit from a 2018 or newer model and swap it into my 2017 so I can have CarPlay with a stock look and I am so excited that I finally found one I finally created an account.

The link is below. This guy has made a custom wiring harness he ships with refurbished head units from entune 3.0 Tacoma models. The head unit and it was plug and play into my 2017 in 5 minutes and works flawlessly. OEM rear camera, GPS antenna, and infotainment screen on the instrument panel all work fine.

Hey, as long as you're happy with it. I'm ready to dump my 2017 head unit for a Kenwood.

I believe I’ve seen where autoharnesshouse.com makes the harness one would need for a plug n play radio swap. I think they start out at $125 for harness and then finding a 2020 and up radio. Which I find on here for around $800. For anyone looking to do this mod. I want to do this myself but can’t justify spending that much on another radio after I upgraded my SR5 radio to Entune plus to get Navigation and bigger screen.

By any chance do we lose any dash functions when we switch radios to a aftermarket. Mines a 2019 Tacoma trd off road with no apple car play

The $20 for shipping is fucking hilarious!
What? $2400 doesn’t quite cover all the expenses?

For $200 you can add wireless CarPlay to your NON CarPlay (entune 2.0) head unit. I just ordered this actually and it’ll be here this weekend.

Entune Premium came with my Premium Tech Package on my 2016 Sport. After 7 years, I am still very happy with it. It has never rebooted out of the blue. Always pairs with my Pixel 6 (calls, texts and Bluetooth audio works great). I mainly listen to podcasts, so thumping bass is not needed. My map data is 7 years old and I don’t use Entune Nav very often but when I do it gets me where I want to go. I know many TW members don’t like Entune, but for the way I use it I am very satisfied.

I am VERY interested in hearing how this works out for you. Please let us know. I would like Carplay, but don't really want to spend close to $1k just to get it.

Will do! I found this from a Reddit post earlier this week and several people said it works great with the rare occasional need to reboot it (hold the volume knob down for a few seconds). I will report back when I do have it installed though.

I am also very interested to see how this works. I went on Amazon and checked the install video out and it looks like you have to remove the Sat/Nav box that is connected below radio, not sure if I want to remove it just to get carplay

People have tucked the carplay box elsewhere and were able to leave everything where it was, so I have read. I'll let you know once I get it if I had to remove anything.

I'm looking at doing something like this for my 2016 Sport, for a few reasons. With one of the latest updates to iOS, my iPhone 13 Pro no longer forwards the entire text message to the head unit for text-to-speech. Instead, it only forwards the preview from the lock screen. So now if a text message gets partly cut off in the preview, I don't get to hear the entire thing played back by Entune.

Also, since there's no way to respond to a text by voice if I'm Bluetoothed to the head unit, I have to either disable the BT connection on my phone temporarily, or just type out the text while I'm driving, which I don't want to do.

My wife's 2022 Jeep Renegade has CarPlay and it works flawlessly, no setup needed. Plug my phone into the USB and I can hear and respond to texts in no time. I'd love to have that ability in my Taco, but man, I'm not sure it's worth $2k or more.

Agreed, I do like my XM. They ran a promo in the fall for three years for $4.99/month which is about as low as you can get them so I did it for my truck and my wife's car.
Please keep this thread informed for sure.
