That harness looks pretty short to go all the way back to the tailgate. Assume yours was a pre-wired model?

oh. to the tailgate i have no idea as mine wasn’t for the tailgate.
Do you already have a factory backup cam?
this connects to the radio. and than you connect it to the reverse trigger and the camera source wire

The kit i got off ebay is the same exact as this but it has the connector for the 14/15 radio which camera source said they couldnt sources
But i see they offer a different kit for 14-17 radio which looks like the same connector.
    Send them a message

Yes, I have a 2007 that had the silver faced radio that came in all the base models. I added a 2015 Entune and a late model tailgate that happens to have an OEM camera. I'm trying to connect OEM radio to OEM camera in an non pre-wired truck. This seems like it would be easy but am having a hard time finding the right solution for my scenario

    check out camera source.
Seeing as you never had a backup camera before you need more wiring and harnesses

Good thread. The conversion seems pretty straight forward, but I do have a couple of questions.

My son has an '11 Pre Runner. Is the connector location and type the same as for the earlier trucks? I'd think so, but it seems that Toyota likes to move connector locations at random.

He has a JVC head unit, but I don't know the model off hand. He says it has a video input for the back up camera and I'll take his word for that. I know I have some RCA cables hanging around in the electronics junk box and can find some pins somewhere.

My only real concern is where to pick up the reverse signal to to turn on the screen on the HU. Can I get that from the gear selector and if so, what color is the wire?

I installed a HU and back up camera in my '06 Tundra, so I'm familiar with the principles involved. I'm just trying to save some time when I go to do the install.

I'm also going to try to figure out why the steering wheel remote control stopped working, but that's a different story.

I'm in a similar boat as your son. Mine is an '11 Pre Runner, non-JBL system. What I have found but not yet tried (post #175 from this thread): to connect “reverse power sensor cable” you can tap into a connector behind the glove box just to the right of cabin air filter. Top black connector in the image below and the wire is the top right red one to the right of yellow wire. You'll have to extend the camera sensor wire coming from the head unit to reach it.

    upload_2021-3-31_12-38-26.jpg

one point that is still unclear to me is whether I'll need to get a 12v -> 6v converter and if so, where to cut it in.

If you're using the OEM camera, I don't think that's an issue. Toyota provides power to turn on the camera and the reverse sense wire just tells the Head Unit to turn on the screen so you can see the image.

At least that's the way it's worked on non factory units I've installed in other vehicles over the years, but those are aftermarket radios and cameras.

Ok. Did this earlier today and follow the same instructions and pics on the first page. Spliced into the red and black an and used some solder for the connection. I did use a high quality 6ft RCA and initially added a Feral to the end but it wouldn’t fit inside the plug so the splice is easier. Another thing we did for the RCA end was to put heat shrink over it and the video connection coming out the radio. They are not a tight fit so it helps hold it together.

I did use a Maestro RR and TO1 harness with a PAC TR1 for the reverse and Brake bypass. They all went in behind the radio

Finally got this to work in my 2011 Tacoma. I had a lot of trouble with stripping the cut end of an RCA cable because the pins would fall out or bend/break when trying to jam them into the holes. What DID work was getting one of these cables and using some crimp connectors I had lying around (after stripping some of the wire because the connectors were cheap as hell).

I have a 2011, I stalled joying audio head unit. Where do I find that 21 pin to snip off. I have looked everywhere and can find it. Is it on the truck or head unit?

I'm fixing to do that for my install. I ran out of time today but I have got everything in and it all appears to be working less the cameras at this point!

I going to run the camera that came with the HU to the front! Anyone know of a good location for this? I was looking at the cross member just behind the front bumper and above the brush guard still undecided.

Hi buddies, Im planning to do this now and looking on your pictures (really helpfully) I just have one doubt. The RCA modified cable which is connected from the back of the coin trash needs to go to Video Input on my HU, that is clear, but what about the reverse camera trigger cable from my HU, where does that cable needs to be connected to? .. or this is not going to be used to image in automatic on my HU also. Thanks again

Hey sir, wonder if you figure this out, I have the same doubt, after connects video cable into my HU and connecting other end in fuse panel as instructed, where do we need to connect the back up camera cable from my HU that triggers the display when reverse is engaged ..

    Reviving an old thread...

I FINALLY swapped out the CD changer on my '09 TRD OR this past week and followed the steps in the first post to hook up the factory camera up to my new Sony unit. Works perfectly (thank you, all!), but I really didn't like the duplicate rear-view video (head unit AND mirror). So, I've dug around a bit trying to figure out how to permanently turn off the mirror view. Looks like a few people have cut wires to disable it, but I'd prefer not to. Anyway, I've realized that after putting my truck in reverse (which, of course, brings up the mirror video) and then holding down the "auto" button for ten-ish seconds, the mirror camera feed seems to turn off and NOT return after restarting the truck. Anytime you want it back, you just push the auto button again. Didn't see that trick in this thread, so I figured I'd share. YMMV. Enjoy

OH my, I cant believe that there isn't a "plug and play" adapter kit already made for this?

I have a 2011 base which I upgraded with a 2013 tailgate camera and rear view mirror (harness was there and was simple to use existing harness).

    Now I am replacing my crapy single din tacoma radio with a Sony double din. I want to keep my original camera in tailgate with wiring harness to the truck feeding into my sony doubledin. Everything I read tells me that I have to ;
    1. Solder in a female RCA cable
2 Either tap into a 12V source or install a voltage boost into the system with PAC VOLT 39.

ISN'T there a prepackaged kit that one can buy where all I do is plug it into the existing wiring?
