My ‘17 is still packin’ the original battery, but I’d have to assume it’s days are numbered. My truck is garage kept, so I’m sure that has helped the battery during the winter and summer months. I do have to park outside for work, so with PA winter approaching, the battery has been in the back of my mind.

Does the procedure for jump starting a manual transmission differ from an automatic? I thought you hook up the jumper cables regardless of the transmission.

I think he may be referring to how to “bump” start a vehicle with a manual transmission. Where you get it coasting with the clutch in and, suddenly, let it out to turn over the engine & causing it to start.

    Yeah.
Just about any brand replacement battery you will find is made by either Johnson Controls or East Penn. The OEM battery in my 2018 was a Johnson Controls battery. I just replaced it with a Walmart Everstart Maxx (also Johnson Controls) since I am about to take a 10-day backcountry trip. It seemed fine, but it would cross the 5-year mark on the trip. Better safe than sorry.

My wife's 4Runners have all come with Panasonic, which you can't find here. I had one of those last 9 years.

Voltage & capacity well within spec after 2.5yrs, but everything was a corroded and leaking eyesore. I upgraded to a DieHard AGM battery, SDHQ terminals, and SDHQ chassis ground cable at the same time I was installing my SwitchPro.

My 2017 battery went out last month when we had a some hotter weather. Can’t complain after 5 years and 105,000 miles. The stock battery never skipped a beat until one night after work it started hard. Next morning: no go. Jumped it and drove 50 miles to an O’Reilly next to work where I swapped it out in the parking lot. Picked up a direct replacement Super Start made by East Penn. If it lasts as long as the factory I am fine. My truck is always parked outside…

5 years 4 months, 31K miles. Took it in for service and it failed the CCA test, was about 50 below min required. Had it replaced. One new battery every 5 years, I can live with that.

My battery randomly went to 3v after about 26 months. I was able to bring it back to life with my Noco Repair. Was very odd.

Once upon a time, yes this was true. But modern vehicles (anything made in the last 15 or so years) with "advanced" electronics can do some weird shit because of low battery voltage. That's the reason more and more vehicles come standard with AGM batteries every year. It ain't a carbureted or early EFI world anymore.

Seems a little ironic that I started this string last week - my battery crapped out last night just a couple days over 4 years and 7 months after I purchased truck with it just a little under the 70k mile mark. Thankful for the NOCO jump box. It got truck home. Then, had to jump again this morning to go get a battery. Put one of these in it - it's a 24F with 4-year replacement. I don't have any added on electrical equipment, so I feel like it'll work well for me just fine.

Appreciate all the input on this string.

    Yeah.
I'm not sure why they recommend AGM batteries. Our stock charging systems don't charge them properly.

The battery in my 2020 was replaced in January 2021 under warranty when I was at the dealership for my 15,000 mile service. It was with in voltage and all but the thing was a leaky mess. I kept cleaning it and putting NOCO battery washers and anti corrosive treatment on the terminals but it kept leaking out. I said something to the service advisor, they checked it and said that should not happen. So, I was given a new upgraded Toyota sure start battery in place of it.
They moved my anti corrosion washers to the new battery for me and it's been perfect since.

    Yeah.
The 3rd gen charging system is ECU-controlled and maxes out at 13.8V. AGM batteries need higher voltage in the 14V+ range to charge properly. On the 2nd gen, apparently you could do some minor physical modifications to increase the voltage, but the 3rd gen requires an ECU flash. If you get a tune, you may be able to include this update in the tune.

The NAPA battery is made in Pennsylvania by East Penn Manufacturing (DEKA), good choice. NAPA stuff in general is usually trustworthy quality.

a close friend - close to our farm - owns a fairly large tire/auto service business...he did a battery test for me (not sure the name) and told me I should probably replace as I'm often MANY miles from civilization.
