My Odyssey PC2150 group 31 battery lasted just shy of the 5 year mark (photos below taken in March 2016 during installation). At roughly $430 it's a tough pill to swallow again; Im looking for a cheaper option, maybe even a slightly smaller capacity battery as I'm not off-grid truck camping as much but would still like some reserve capacity on hand for the occasional overnight. Any advice? Thanks in advance!

$430 for a battery??? Holy shit. Here’s what I do. I get a new battery every 5 years. Doesn’t matter if the old battery is good or not. Every 5 years I replace the battery. Since doing this on several vehicles I’ve never got stuck somewhere because of battery failure. I buy 27 series Costco or Walmart batteries. Except for extreme environments they always have lasted at least 5 years. They cost around $100. They have never let me down.
I also have an xtra battery that I use for various things around home. When I go out in the boonies I throw it in the back of the truck and have backup.

I totally get what you're saying. The unique thing about the group 31 is that it has more reserve capacity than some dual battery setups. I can run my fan all night in the tent, listen to music, power lights... or whatever Im doing on battery alone, then wake up and brew coffee and still have plenty of reserve. It's a 70lb battery with amazing capacity. That's why it's 400+. I really dont want a standard $100 battery because I do off-grid every once in a while still and the extra capacity is key IMO.

Get yourself an X2 power 27F. It's a rebranded Northstar battery sold only at Batteries Plus. Even says Northstar on the battery itself. 5 year warranty. Right now you can get 10 percent plus a mail in rebate. Also, did you up the voltage to properly keep the battery charged?

Well, there you go! Ive been charging it at stock 14.0v for the past 4.5 years. I wonder how much more life it would have gotten if I upped the charge voltage. Thanks for the link. I will look at the X2 closely.

I just bought an Everstart battery at Walmart for $89 (on sale $10 off) after the last one lasted a little over 4 years. I was lucky and my battery died at home but said to myself for $89 I will replace it after 4 years even if it tests good, that's only a little over $22 a year and is worth the peace of mind. I did overcharge this battery a few times with a cheap Harbor freight charger, so that might be why it didn't last 5 years.
