Looking for help on a maintenance issue, maybe some else has experienced this.

2020 TRD Sport, Double Cab, 4x4, Regular Bed, OEM Firestone 17" wheel, 1. month old.

I get a loud whining or humming sound at speeds between 45-60 MPH when the throttle is applied. This sound only occurs when the driver or cruise control applies throttle. Manually shifting gears between 4th, 5th and 6th has no effect on the sound. Also "sideloading" the suspension has zero effect on the sound. It seems to originate from the back passenger side, maybe the right rear wheel but I'm not 100% sure about that. Again the sound is in direct relation to the gas pedal, you press the gas pedal you get the sound, let the pedal go and it stops, tap the pedal rapidly and the sounds comes and goes rapidly. It's impossible to ignore, the stereo needs to be above 38 to drown it out. You can actually hear it with the windows down. I'm taking it to the dealer this week and was looking for anyone with a similar experience that might be helpful. Thanks

Is it maybe the rear differential? I think this is common, mine has a slight whine, I just leave it, rather than having the dealer tear it all to hell and rebuild.

This. There's a slim chance that the dealer will do anything about it, and if they do, there's a better than slim chance that the noise will return.

You'll get used to it and tune it out eventually.

I would check the level of fluid in the rear diff., just to make sure it was full from the factory.

My 2020 has a slight whine in the rear... I’ve learned to live with it. Only happens when feathering throttle at 65. Can only hear with radio off and windows up. Hasn’t gotten worse since i I purchased. Not worried about it.

Mine does the same . I have taken it to the dealer they diagnosed it as a driveshaft noise .Said its normal no fix or solution for it . I have about 5k miles on the truck now so if it breaks down because of it its recorded at the dealer as normal. I just turn my stereo up louder now lol .I would at least take it in and have them document it on your truck even if they call it normal your covered in the long run . Best of luck hope it helps .

Head directly to the dealer and make them fix it. It's a brand new truck!!

Pretty sure my buddies 2019 trd does the same, among some weird tranny quirks. Dealer claim its normal for that vehicle. Its lifted now with more aggressive tires so you really can't hear anything but the tire noise after the truck gets up to speed.

I tried and failed to get mine fixed

Well, i'm still waiting to hear from mine. I had a 2001 tundra with nearly 300k miles and no whine. I've had toyota pickups since the 70's and never heard them whine. Can't say some of those small pickups were perfect though.

Truck makes noises. Welcome to the club. Just crank up the volume on your radio and enjoy the truck. I have the rear diff whine around 55-60mph. Honestly can't say it affects anything. I know a lot of people around here talk about their older trucks having no noises, but I think it's all relative. I mean the cabin in the Tacoma is pretty quiet so you tend to pick up on a lot of 'other' noises. But if you have a 'noisy' older truck, the whine would just be drowned out. By the time you throw on a roof rack plus some knobby tires you won't hear nuttin'

    Tacoma update

First off thanks to the folks who were able to read and understand my comments, I really appreciate your insights and you taking the time to share your personal experiences.

I talk to the service manager and we went over the issue, I told him that this was not going to be ok unless the truck was fixed period. To his credit he accepted my offer to go for a ride and he admitted that the issue was not a "Tacoma thing" and needed to be fixed. They went at it pretty quickly and decided to replace the rear differential (Chew you nailed it) and that completely resolved the issue. It's like I'm driving a different truck.

Well.... guess you’re lucky. I and many others were told quite firmly that this is “normal” and to suck it up.
Makes me more frustrated that yours got fixed :p

Could you post your Repair Order description?

Go to a different dealer or really lay it out for them. I was nice but very much to the point.
