This is hard to explain. Basically coasting when no gas is applied, there is no whining noise. When just a little throttle is applied there is a whining noise that is annoying to hear. Add a little more throttle and the noise goes away. I know that is a lousy description, but I can’t explain it any differently. Has anyone have any ideas?

Some searching here will find lots of threads on the topic.

If you sprang for the extended warranty, time to let it help you.

In my location I'd go to a specialty differential shop for diagnosis and possible repair.

Have you had any differential fluid service performed?
Same thing happened to my 04 4Runner back in 08, I noticed the same whine. I blew the differential brought it to Toyota and the technician found it was low on gear oil. Luckily, my extended warranty took care of this.

Like the member ^^^ said, if you have the extended warranty, let Toyota take care of it.

Also, if you have the tools and depending on the miles it wouldn't hurt to service the diff fluid, cheers!

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
From my perspective, this is a normal phenomena.
Both my '06 TRD OR and my current '21 TRD OR exhibited this behavior occasionally.
Has yet to develop any mechanical issues.

My 21 TRDOR makes the same whine sound. Diff fluid change made no difference. Rear axle rebuild isn't an excessively expensive repair so I'm not concerned.

So what is your plan? Run it until your rear axle completely blows, than fix?

I'll monitor the situation and once the sound becomes louder I'll have the rear end rebuilt. I have a few jeeps that have all been regeared so I'm used to $1,300 per axle for the rebuild.

My ‘21 OR did this too, repeatable every time- 57mph, let off throttle and it’s whining, on the gas and much above or below 57, no whine.

My rear locker wouldn’t engage at around 18k, I believe it was, and the dealership (warranty) replaced the rear carrier (going from memory) and the whine is gone.

    I don’t have this with my 23
I did change the diff fluid at 500
Funny how the manufacturers don’t recommend an oil change but all aftermarket gear builders do.

Not sure if my early fluid change prevented a whine or I just got a properly set up diff.

Mine has done this from new it’s been the same noise level since new . I brought it up with my service advisor . They diagnosed it heard the whine . Was advised by Toyota to add a sound barrier to it . I did have the fluids changed at 30k no metal shavings . I’m at 50k and still going . My guess is Toyota won’t replace the differential unless the noise is excessive. So just keep driving it if it becomes really bad push for a differential swap . I have read that others have done this and noise comes back . I don’t know …

I think it’s resonance coming from the area .Almost like the side view mirror thing . It’s not like everyone is blowing up rear diffs . Pick up trucks in general are noisy in those areas . It’s all exposed if you think about it .
If your fluid is good ,pick a good Zeppelin tune or some Pink Floyd and you will forget about it . Just put it really loud lol

My doctor recommended against wine in the rear end.

Really if you think about it , if the oil in the diff is good , nothing Is coming apart. If you don’t hear banging and stuff like that , it could be anything stupid that has nothing to do with mechanical performance. I had a 01 Gen 1 that from brand new had Vibes in the back . I could see the passenger seat would vibrate or shake on the highway . Fast forward 200 k miles later , it did the same thing not more or less . It never broke and never gave me an issue, and believe me I loaded the hell out of that truck , with tiles and other masonry stuff.
All I ever did was struts ,belt , timing belt ( water Pump also ) twice , shocks ,and brakes. Of course I was all over it maintenance wise . Was it fast no, was it quiet inside no, did it get good gas mileage no , was it a great little truck 100 percent absolutely. I can honestly say that about all my Toyota stuff I owned . As of now , I never got burnt once . At least so far . That’s why I keep coming back .
