I only drive my truck about once a month because I don't go anywhere these days, and I have a company vehicle if I do need to run an errand. My truck is a 2008 with around 60,000 MI and it's in pretty good shape. I started it today for a doctor's appointment, and was met with this absolutely annoying clicking coming from the dash inside. You can actually feel the dashboard clicking. I popped the hood and there is no noises at all so it's definitely coming from inside. I'm assuming it's some sort of relay, but what could be causing this?

Edit: took a video but it won't load

Probably one of the blend door servos on the HVAC case, two are behind the glove box on the left and the third is below the glove box on the left. You can put your hand on them to see which one it is.

Left one is mode, center one is recirculate
    20211011_182913.jpg

    Lower one is Temp

So I think I may have the same little rattle/click sound from my dash as mentioned above and I located all three of those servos and put my fingers on them while it was making the sound but I’m not sure what exactly I’m supposed to be feeling..? They just feel like a plastic plug sitting there

Usually the one making noise you will be able to feel it moving but if your unsure you can unplug them one at a time and see if it stops, if it does then the one you unplugged is the culprit if it doesn't then you have something else making noise.

    I found my dash rattle
2006 dc Tacoma. posting to help, I removed my glove box 6 times over a 2month span and have finally found it.

there’s a bundle of cables on the right side of the ac blower motor when you take of the glove box. They are bundled together with a black clip and then clipped into a metal frame. Cut the clip with a pair of dikes tape that shit up and drive in piece.
I recommend finding all of these clips under the dash and removing them then taping your wires to the metal frame.

the clip is black plastic circular around the wires and then it clips into a circular hole on the metal underneath

Sorry for taking so long to update. My noise definitely was not a rattle, it was a very loud click that you could actually feel inside the dash. I cycle through the AC knobs a few more times and it seemed to stop so it was definitely something with the AC system, but luckily has since gone away.
Thank you for the replies and for the detailed photos, I'm assuming that servo was my problem, hopefully it doesn't need changing.

    Hey All,

Just changed mine. It was the recirc servo. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Tight fit. Need a 7/32 or 5.5mm socket. Tight fit but doable.

About 15-20 min total to remove and replace. Got the new part at Rockauto.

    Standard Motor Products #F04007 $34 plus tax/ship.

I couldn't be bother to take it apart and see if I could reshape the fingers.....LOL

UPDATE: Ugh, I started the truck this morning and it was clicking again with the new part. (Didn't drive the taco over the weekend)

I tested it on Friday and it was perfect no sounds, went thru hot/cold, recirc on/off, different speeds on the fan, different areas, floor, face, windshield, defrost, etc.

Everything was good. Now Friday was warm and sunny and today is cooler and raining. I know this is a problem when the inside and the outside temps are different.

    I am thinking two things:

    1) Bad part from Rockauto - Standard Motor Products #F04007

    2) Somehow I installed this backwards? I don't see how but you never know.

Current observations - clicking sound all the time - even with the blower fan off.

Only stops when the recirc button is engaged.

Took a peek inside the dash with glove box out.

Recirc button ON Foam pad is away from the grill

Recric button OFF Foam Pad against the grill

    Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions?

As always thanking you in advance.....

Souns like a bad part, I dont believe there's any way to install it incorrectly.
A defective part wouldn't surprise me at all with todays parts quality control, defective parts are becoming the norm unfortunately. Even parts manufacturers that used to be pretty good now have issues.

    @Dm93

So I had some free time before the sun set and I went outside - took the glove box out and starting playing around.

Clicking noise is still there unless the recirc button is on. Foam pad is away from grill. Double checked.

So I took the electrical connection off and hooked it up to the old part (still have it).

Holding the old part electrified. I switched the recirc button on and off.

The dial (for lack of a better phrase) turned one way non-stop with recirc on

and the other way non-stop with recirc off.

HMMM... So I 'm thinking - shouldn't these be 1/2 no more than 3/4 turns then stop as the foam pad is only opening and closing.

So sure the original part is busted and free spinning makes sense. I didn't have enough time to remove the new part and check it's rotation.

So the question is - is this suppose to free spin or have a set half revolution?

    Hmmmmmmmmm

Looks like it would, I just checked mine and there's 10v on it all the time, unbolted it and it will keep turning as well. I believe when the door hits the stop it stops the motor from turning unless the gears strip in which case it would click.

@Dm93. New part has been installed. Everything looks/sound good. Another warm day today in NY. Going to try it tonight and day/night for the next few days....

I'll update later this week. Seems like you might win the prize on the bad part.

Note: got the same part - came from a different warehouse though......

Not suprising at all to get defective parts, I work at a shop and it gets worse every year.
We try to go OE when we can but it's difficult where we are located.

I don't really see what else it could be, there's no feedback circuit on the recirc door like there is on the other blend door actuators, the door is what stops the actuator from moving.
It is kind of odd for standard brand to have that many problems but they moved alot of their manufacturing to china too now so..., if it was a doorman part I would say absolutely you can have multiple bad ones in a row.
I know on Chrysler stuff it's a waste of time to put an aftermarket actuator on them, they 90% of the time don't even make it through the calibration. I rarely ever replace a Toyota actuator, like maybe 2 in the 10 years I've worked there.
