Mainly wanting to get a way to monitor transmission temps as I have a 2023 without the separate cooler. Will be doing a couple hour run while towing a 4000# TT (guessing about 4800 loaded - I need to run across a scale) in a couple weeks across the midwest so nothing too steep or long but eventually will be doing mountains out west. May get a scan gauge eventually but already have a bluetooth ODBII dongle. And likely adding a cooler before tackling any real mountain trips. How do the apps compare for use in a 2023 tacoma? Anyone posted comparisons? And how about ease of setup?

The Fusion app is cheap enough to buy, maybe $10 or so.
You can buy the add-on PID package for another $15 or so.

It is my understanding the latest PID package they offer is a few years old, but works correctly with the 2023 models.
Buying the PID package for cheap avoids the hassle of compiling your own PID entries just to save a few bucks.

You can then hook your iPhone to the truck via CarPlay.

Thanks! But I have Android. Should have mentioned that before. Don't think I can display anything but maps on the car display screen via Android Auto. If I'm going to spend $25 on an app I might just jump to scan gauge. I see a special for Scan Gauge 2 for $112. I would need to figure out where to put it.

$20 ($5 to install, %15 for toyota PIDs).
The phone can display more PIDs on a single screen. Thete are options to paint your dashboard like Picasso and combine miltiple PIDs
You most likely has a phone holder.
Also, Fusion has diagnostic module with ability to clear codea and do a datalog.
..and 20 <112. You can get fusion running befote your bedtime

Good points. Actually, I haven't found a good phone holder for this vehicle. I have one that clips to the vent louvers but in the new tacoma the louvers turn. :(

I would avoid the *?*, I've never heard of it actually, sounds questionable.

What's this? Looks like the phone screen displayed on the trucks infotainment display. Can you use a few more words to explain this? If that's what it is, how is it done? Possible with Android?

From what little I have read on the subject a good head unit that retains vehicle integration is going to run about $800. I'll pass...

I did find some on getting Torque Pro display onto the android auto display with a few cheap software add ons so I might try that.

Just added toolbox and roof-rack to haul my fishing boat 100's of miles into the backwoods every week. Goodrich K02s, Bilstein 5100 front and back, no lift.
I bought the scangauge 3 a few weeks ago, specifically for engine oil, coolant and transmission temps.

I do a lot of off roading in 4lo and 4hi and a lot of high elevation mountain climbs. It of course does more. Next firmware will include status of each engine cylinder, but you can program that now if needed.

This pic. Trans temp rising with a lot of 4lo driving. Into 2 wheel and it quickly drops below 200.

It is great to see the relationships between driving conditions.

No fancy mounting either. I just ran the cable up the door seal and stuck the included suction cup in lower left corner of my windshield. Does not impact driving vision, and it is a heads up view so not too distracting.

I like the ScanGauge III, but in my area, this would result in a smashed window when thieves steal it.
For this reason alone, I opted to use my iPhone which is more fiddly, but always leaves the truck with me.
