OBD2 tool to change how keyless remote works?

Disclaimer: I am not too knowledgeable on OBD2 devices, but I darned well know I am NOT paying $200+ for my dealer to reprogram my remotes & my '24 Taco to roll down all windows with a long press on the unlock button on my keyless fob.

Would a device like this work?

I am not interested in buying an OBD2 cable and hack some version of Toyota TechStream to do this. I also understand that Toyota no longer supports TechStream on '24 models, replacing it with the new Global Techstream + (GTS+) which is *what I understand to be* a web-based subscription service, most likely to combat all the hacked black market versions of TechStream before. (As a test to this theory, I did indeed install a hacked version of Techstream on my laptop and was successful in connecting to my '24 Toyota, but I had to fool it into thinking it was a 2023 Taco, because I could not find any way to "load" the setup info for any '24 model. I immediately disconnected because I didn't want the hacked Techstream v18 damaging any of my sensors, etc.)

Soooo, how can I program my remote to roll down all my windows at the same time without paying $200 at a dealer to have it done?

I got carista off of Amazon and it worked for what I wanted. To disable the seatbelt chime and add the long press on the fob to roll down my windows. You do have to pay for a one month subscription for $9.99 though.

 

I was hoping I could do that... I turned off the seat belt alarm with my Gen 3 that way.

 

I also use the Carista. You can enable the key fob to do the windows with it.

 

I honestly would be shocked if a call to the GM at the dealer would not fix this for you. This should be a standard ask that cost them almost next to nothing to do.

 

This was an issue back in the 3RD gen days. It'll cost you more for the dealer to do than buying a Carista and doing it yourself. $40.

 

I wish they did a per vin price. JScan for jeeps does that, really nice to have.

 

you can do it yourself if you can get techstream to work for you on a laptop.

4th gen isn’t supported by the old techstream I don’t think.

 

you have to get a current version. trust me dealer techs have the current version if they want to charge $200 to change a bit for customer.

depending on dealer some will do it free for the first request and new purchase, most will nickel and dime for everything

just rent carista for 1 month and get everything you want sorted out in 30 days. then be done with carista

just remember to canx your sub to carista.

2023 was the last model year for the old techstream and any new models aren’t supported. So you have to use the new subscription browser based techstream.

it’s why using a licensed after market tool makes more sense now

 

i imagine techstream will go browser based in the future to get around the free versions people use.

 

A few observations (& a rant) from my recent OBD2 customization experiences:

• Techstream does NOT support gen4 Tacos. I could connect with v18, but do nothing since my Taco isnt supported. I was told by my local dealer they are using GTS+, Global TechStream+ for '24 models. GTS+ appears to be a cloud-based replacement of TechStream, but I am not sure. Maybe someone closer to this topic can clarify.
• I bought the Carista EVO unit since I have a F150 I want to customize. The more expensive EVO model is supposed to support many manufacturers and models, but I have not tested the EVO on a Ford yet.
• I connected to my '24 Taco in a matter of minutes and had the Carista app working its magic. I customized a few things like turning off the drivers side seat ding-dongs, turning on a long-press on the key fob unlock button to roll down all windows, and extending the lane change tuen signal to 6 blinks vs 3. The app and hardware dongle worked flawlessly.
• I don't see me needing to keep a month to month or annual subscription, so I'll just cancel before the free 30-day trial ends.
• I think the 30 day trial is more than sufficient to customize a vehicle and I think it is very generous of Carista to offer a 30-day trial and allow canceling at any time. I think they really want to drive hardware sales and subscription revenue is ancillary to their revenue model.
• Screw a dealership charging me ANYTHING for changing OBD customizations. I was quoted the hourly tech rate of $196 with a minimum 1 hour charge to make changes with GTS+. Screw that. Frankly, that's just raping the customer. Shame on my local dealership.
• <Rant start> I don't understand why dealerships charge for customizations. I paid a tall, tall dollar for my new '24 Taco and I expect it to operate the way I desire. Why the heck do I have to pay extra to get it to operate the way I want? That's like a plumber installing water pipes in a new house and the homeowner coming back and saying but there's no water in my house, why not? And the plumber says, "Oh, you want water flowing IN the house? I'll have to charge you to turn on the water coming into the house." <Rant End>

 

its already been proven that new MY24's can only be accessed via the sub based browser version only. stand alone techstream cannot access MY24. i quoted the reference person.

 

both of those scenario's are outside the scope of what toyota has deemed user serviceable. if you need to hook up a device to change a setting, that requires a tech with a techstream account to make those changes. the account is tied to the tech, not the dealer (and if i am correct, the dealer makes the tech pay for that sub, not the dealer, just like tools)

that takes away time and money from a tech to add you to do a service for free, where he could be doing a paying service call.

 

Any idea if this works on the 3rd gen?
