So I killed my front #2 bank cat a few weeks ago. A coil failed sending fuel into the exhaust for about 50mi. My truck has 210k mi and is basically a beach rig at this point. (She has lived a hard life) I really don't want to spend $600 to have a new cat installed so I was wondering if I could use a URD O2 sensor simulator to clear my CEL to pass inspection.
    Thanks

do they do a tail pipe sniffer test? If so, even if the CEL is cleared it wont pass if your cat is messed

I thought these are used for the rear 02's?

They are, it's the rear narrowband O2 sensors that monitor the cat's effectiveness. In normal operation the cat stores and releases O2 as it burns up oxides of nitrogen making the oxygen content of the exhaust gas after the cat have less O2 and have O2 levels that vary slower than in the pre-cat flow. O2 sensor "simulators" filter and condition the output of the rear sensor(s) to make the sensor's output to trick the ECU in to believing a properly working catalytic converter is installed and functioning.

To do this of course a properly functioning rear sensor is needed so that there is some signal to condition.

We did this all the time on Miatas and Mustangs--here's how to make your own for $5 or $6...

What about one of these? They have worked great for me on previous cars with aftermarket exhausts.

Spark plug anti-fouling adapters will sometimes work--they move the business end of the O2 sensor out of the main exhaust flow, this will often reduce its output enough to trick the ECU. They usually have to be bored out to accept the full sensor nose diameter...

I think the ones they sell at auto parts chains might need drilling out(for legal reasons??)? None of the ones I've purchased online needed it though.

Many states now just check to verify that DTC P1000 (OBD2 readiness check) is not set. It's a benefits of the complexity of modern engine control systems, government think that no "ordinary citizen" could possibly be smart enough to trick OBD2.

I know a fellow in Georgia whose 2004 Mustang Cobra passed their tests (including a "visual") with no cats--nothing zilch, nada; just straight pieces of pipe--using a set of the MIL eliminators I made for him...

Just curious, were they purchased as O2 problem "fixers", or anti-fouling adapters?

    Super charged,urd u - conn computer 7th injector, headers, pipe bomb y pipe,high flow exhaust.etc....
Those are o2 extenders so the o2 samples a smaller amount due to not being in the stream. You might be able to get o2 simlutators check with urdusa.Gadget is a very wise man!Good luck let us know what happens.

Thats cool and all... here in CA they measure your emissions when you get smogged. Even if there are no CEL's you can still fail miserably if something is wrong.

I just barely passed when I had Doug Thorley Long Tube headers on my X-Runner with the o2 simulator. You can take a chance, our emissions very strict lol.

No vehicle inspections of any sort here in "deplorable" land.

Twenty years ago in a fit of uncharacteristic rationality the FL legislature determined that 98+% of vehicles were passing and it made no sense fiscally or otherwise to continue to test them...

Thanks for the Under Dog Racing recommendation. $119 for an O2 sensor simulator. easy install.

Has anyone successfully performed this mod on a 2nd gen rear sensor and have the code go away?

They only do that in CA if your vehicle is older than 2000 model year. My 04 has never been put on a dyno or had a sniffer test done (LA County).

They just do an OBDII scan to make sure all your emissions/sensor monitors are green and no CEL of course, and a visual for any non-CARB approved parts. If 1999 or older then yeah, gotta do the tailpipe/dyno test which is another level of suck.
