I’m installing my dobinson coils on some 5100’s. I’m on the bottom perch. Everything looks perfect, just can’t get the dang compressor hooks out. Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks.

I'm not an expert in this matter, but it looks like you have too much preload for that style of spring compressor. Need to remove the coils, take the compressor off and then source a different style compressor with smaller hooks. Or take it to a shop to install them on a press.

Hammer them out in this direction just like I illustrated.

I have the same exact spring compressors. Don't listen to this ^

If the first line of that statement didn't tip you off... then let me help you. It was a suggestion of a fix. Maybe not THE fix, but a solution none the less.

Before I started getting too medieval with it, I put the compressor bolt back in and rotated them out using leverage. I had to pull pretty hard. I seems like this particular compressor has extra long and thick jaws on the hooks. I got them out finally. Thanks for the suggestions. I wasn’t worried about too much pre load as they are only a 1.5” coil and I’m on the lowest perch. The compressors were just too dang thick.

As mentioned, drive a wedge in to open up between the coils and remove the tool. Wood or plastic would be best to hopefully not damage the finish.

You don't know the answer, but you are the first to respond??? Your first line said "I'm not an expert." Could have let the people that know what they are doing respond before giving poor advice.

Although I wouldn’t have done this. This stuff definitely does cross your mind when this happens.

That is the best way. Sliding the end of the bolt in and using the long bolt as leverage to pry it out. Good shit!

Are you saying that my method wouldn't work?

My spring compressors have smaller hooks and don't require "beating them" with a hammer.

    20190402_121510.jpg

Sorry that you don't like my method, but that doesn't make it a poor method.

Those would have worked so much better than the ones that I used.

You're definitely not the first to have that issue. Glad you got it sorted out.

The best thing to use is a proper strut spring compressor, one that doesn't have jaws/teeth as thick as those. The other guy's kit looks pretty cool, I haven't seen that "thinner" type around much.

I’m all of the way in Georgia, but that is a pretty cool service that you have going on up there.
