I'm trying to figure out how and where the front and rear axels are disconnected when in 2 wheel drive.

I'm trying to schedule an appointment in June w/ East Coast gears to have them install some 5.29's but after a coupe of days with my new tires I need the rear done now. I can do this in my driveway but don't feel comfortable tackling the front. Trying to find out if I can drive with the different gears in the rear and not damage the transfer case or front end.

You can do it, but the truck will be un drivable if you need 4x4. The speed sensors will go nuts if the front and rear diffy are not in sync.

It can work in extremely slippery conditions at very slow speeds.

The transfer case disconnects from the transmission and the front differential disconnects from the front drive shaft when in 2wD.

You can pull the front drive shaft, that will insure that it inadvertently doesn't get in 4x4 and grenade something expensive -- or multiple somethings.

The big problem is the dashboard is going to light up like Christmas and the computer may go into limp mode or shut the truck down.

Perhaps the ABS system can be disabled to allow you to drive it, someone with more knowledge will hopefully come along soon.

It will work, but only if you are running the correct oil in the transfer.

As long as you don't engage 4wd, you will be fine. You will not affect ABS or any other system. The 4wd disconnect is inside the transfer case. And is perfectly fine seeing different speeds in 2wd. Not that it will see any, there is a disconnect in the front axle as well.

Its fine, just dont put the truck in 4Hi or 4Lo. In 2lo the front driveshaft is disconnected from the rear at the transfer case.
You can pull the 4wd fuse or disconnect the connector off one the (2) actuators if you are really afraid you (or somebody) might forget.

(Pulling fuse or connectors will cause dash to christmas-tree on you, but wont hurt anything. Removing the front driveshaft will avoid the dash lights, but seems VERY very excessive.)

Wheel speed is sensed at the wheel, so no problems there. I don't think there are speed sensors inside the dif housings so I don’t think you’ll have any dash lights.

however, if you engage 4WD you’re gonna destroy something, so put masking tape over the actuator dial.
