I want to get something that big this winter through the ice on a small rod and reel. Be the fight of a lifetime I feel like.

    Some really cool shit
This was on a 5wt fly rod. But that's my primary stick. If I'm on a small stream I have a 4wt and a 3wt when needed. Primarily the 5wt is my go to.

i actually dont have a rod/reel capable of hucking an A-rig. i fished one at Clearlake, and that lure is honestly not for me. i just didnt jive with it.

my strategy is to deep sink a juicy dropshot at this point, and maybe a super deep crankbait.

It sounds crazy, but it can help to take a fall in the colder water when you're prepared and not actually out in the middle of the lake fishing. Your body/mind will get a feel for what its like so if you actually do go over out in the middle of the lake, you already have an idea of what to expect and it may help prevent panic. It's hard to get back into a kayak when its nice out with warm water temps.. imagine cold water!

Crap x2. What do you all think of the YUM LIGHTWEIGHT a-rig. Seems like I can throw it with lighter gear. I would need to keep it to three hooks

They work, I've got a few. If you want I can lend you my A-Rig rod next time you come to Clearlake. Just let me know, I'm like 20 mins down the road.

Anyone on this thread fish steelhead by fly in located in the bay area? I'm weathered fly fisherman (mostly trout, all types) looking for a mentor/ sensei for some advice/fishing buddy now that the majority of our flowing trout waters have closed for the season. Have tag, plenty of rods in appropriate weights. Let me know if you getting out there this December.
    Cheers,
    E.Roy

I found smallies! Almost jinxed myself by catching one on the first cast. Lake Berryessa. They fight like they mean it.

@Porter707 can’t remember, was it Holloman who bought your 3rd gen? Saw a 3rd gen that looked just like yours on 101 today (had a grey VO too). Thought it had to be your old rig.
