For those of us who change our own oil....you know that our drain plugs point down and result in oil quickly gushing out the moment the drain-plug is pulled. The oil pours out with enough force to hit the catch-pan and splatter up and over the lip of the pan. Happens at least 50% of the time for me.

Here's a simple, cheap solution. I bought a round plastic food container...1.8 gallon in my case...but it doesn't matter...as long as it's fairly large and round. It does not have to be all that tall though. I cut the bottom out to form a ring that catches all the splatter. Problem solved.

I got a cheap oil absorbant mat from Autozone that I lay out. Its about 4 foot square. Has a rubber bottom so oil wont soak through to garage floor. Also makes the floor a little softer on my back. Works like a charm.

    Ok, then...

What do you do with the oil-soaked homemade splash baffle when you take it out of the drain pan?

Do you have to hold it over something else and splash oil all over that object? The way you cut the bottom has a ridge that will lift oil out of the pan with it. Now you have two pieces of plastic all covered in oil, the drain pan, and the baffle that needs to be put down somewhere when you drain the pan back into the jug, and have an oily rag or two or three.

Not trying to start a fight here, just questioning the logic behind it.

BTW, I still seem to be covered in oil when I'm done, even with a Fumoto valve. ;)

Hmmm......Put hose on the end of Fumoto valve, put hose into empty 5 qt oil container, turn valve, go have beer, return and close valve, disconnect hose, leave in container, remove now full oil container, remove hose, screw on lid, dispose of used oil. After seeing your setup, I can see why you're not interested.

It's just a piece of plastic. A couple of swipes with a paper towel and it's done. It was a breeze to clean up. Not a drop of oil anywhere but the pan and "ring". By the time I got around to wiping out the "ring" most of the oil had drained down into the pan anyway.

I forgot to mention, the hose used to drain the oil goes into the, new, now empty, 5 qt oil container for storage and use during the next oil change, and onto a shelf. I don't really wipe up anything. But, ya know, whatever works for ya. Your tip was to control oil splatter, just say'in, the Fumoto valve method is probably as effective.

I'll try this one more time here.....I DO NOT HAVE A FUMOTO VALVE, NOR DO I WANT ONE. It doesn't matter "how effective the valve is" if I don't have one and 99% of the people here on TW don't either. I have $3 and 5 minutes worth of work invested in something very simple that keeps you and your garage floor clean during an oil change. That's it. Nothing more....nothing less.

You're trying to turn this into to a "my method can beat up your method" kind of thing. I never said this was some earth-shattering, amazing thing or even the best option. Just a tip...that's all. Go start your own thread about the merits of the Fuckmoto valve and how it's trumps a piece of plastic instead of pounding the same point over and over here.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
A flip cap on that plastic drain pan would be a thoughtful touch.

Does the stock oil drain plug have a magnet on it? If so, does the Fumoto Valve also have a magnet?

I always have splash problems when changing my oil. I do have like a $0.99 shitty oil drain pan, could probably step up to something better.

Yeah...but it seemed like the deeper ones were smaller. Anyway, I've had it for years and it serves it's purpose. The Taco has been the only vehicle that's caused me any issues with it. But not anymore.
