No more trans cooler?

Does anyone, anywhere have any actual info on why Toyota took the trans cooler out of the Tacoma from 2020 and on?

I have a ‘22 TRD OR DCSB 4x4 and just today noticed that it does not have a trans cooler (yes it has “towing package”, that’s standard now).

I have tried to search all around and cannot find anything. Is the cooling system just so robust now that a transmission cooler is not needed? Are they using some new oil that has a significantly higher temperature rating? Or, more insidiously, was this actually just done to save money?

The transmission cooler is the cooling system unless it's running through the radiator (which is shit). I'd go with cost savings. They never put much effort into the transmission cooling anyway. Most people don't tow heavy with their trucks so Toyota's going with it's unneeded.

I absolutely wouldn't tow much of anything without a large cooler.

Might wanna move this to the 3rd gen forum. And yes external trans cooler has been gone since mid-2020 model year. My truck was one of the first to come without one, much to my surprise.

As to the reason why...could have been cost savings, or supply chain problems. In the end Toyota's engineers figured the trans could reliably make it past the 60k mile warranty period so the cooler could go

Do you have any basis for claiming an intercooler in the radiator is "shit", or is that your unqualified opinion? I ask because I've been through countless threads and I have yet to see even a single instance where a heavy workload caused a 6-speed automatic transmission to overheat.

My trans consistently runs at 210-220 when I'm on the highway. It's high enough that I'm gonna change the fluid and install an external cooler

Are you sure that is outside the specifications for your transmission?

I've seen the charts that show how quickly trans fluid breaks down under those temperatures. That's enough for me

Thats hot, mine ran 180-190 W/O tow package on the highway. 4-6 hardly builds any heat because the TC is locked in those gears

TC can unlock in any gear in this trans, even 4th. I watch temps like a hawk when I tow and have seen it happen many times

Charts for conventional ATF, or synthetic ATF like virtually all manufacturers use these days?

Weather or not the ATF is synthetic doesn't really matter, its the additive package that gets damaged not the fluid itself, once the friction modifiers start oxidizing the fluid is useless.

Do you monitor TC and pan temps?

LOL, whenever someone wants to make a point about some oil related topic they refer to a Scamzoil article; sorry, they are not an authoritative source of information.

How about the SAE archives; peer reviewed scientific studies.
