Anyone (most likely in the New England area) have their Tacoma undercoating done using NHOU - as opposed to woolwax. I got an estimate for $200.- for first application of their ‘back to black’. You tube videos are pretty enticing…
    Thoughts and experiences appreciated. Thanks!

Oh there will be some mods all right
Both myself and my parents get our vehicles sprayed with it, I would definitely recommend it.

I'm in NH and got it done last December on my new to me 2013, definitely very happy with it. The black looks great and seems to do a great job at stopping the bit of surface rust that I had starting. My first car (subaru) rusted out badly so I'll be getting this done annually, 200-300 a year is really not that bad compared to the price of new vehicles these days.

You could probably get away with every 2 years if you don't drive a lot in the winter during storms, it does hold up well if you don't powerwash the underside. I don't think you can go wrong with NHOU, Fluid Film, or woolwax though maybe others can speak to direct comparisons.

Agreed with Peter, you can't go wrong with NHOU, FF or Woolwax; it's kinda preference and whether you're applying it yourself. NHOU can be more annoying to self-apply, but for $200 that's actually a decent price for a service. I just got mine set with NHOU two weeks ago. Visually looks great and holds up decently like Peter said. I personally found it DOESN'T stink that much, but some people are more sensitive to it. Has a slightly sweet smell, if that's something that would bother you.

@EveryDayIsTacoTues anything is better than the smell of fluid film for two or three weeks… thanks!

Sounds good! The one thing I will say is that NHOU from my experience does have more of that "wet look" and is glossier than FF since it's oil based (like it says on the tin), compared to lanolin of the FF/Woolwax. Some people are super particular, so figured I'd mention. I'm in the North East but not New England, though I'd figure NHOU might not be best for those that drive on fine clay or silty soil as it'd probably attract dust like crazy.

Late to the post, but I'm in NH and have been doing my truck for a couple years now with NHOU.

    I highly recommend it!

JR’s Undercoating - Sterling Ma. Post was from last year, can’t guarantee your price won’t differ. The frame and undercarriage of my truck required no prep before application of NHOU - and I used saltz gone to wash it the night before I dropped her off. A year later and the undercarriage is still covered in back to black. I’ll go back next year to have it done again.

I'm one of those people who hate smells, and NHOU smells pretty bad to me. I was parked in town the other day and could smell my truck from half a block away.

my question is: what's in it? They keep mentioning oil based, but not what kind of oil. With FF and WW, it's lanolin, and as such in no way dangerous or harmful. Petroleum oils are. Whatever you put on the truck will come off to some degree, although from experience I can tell you WW is much more 'durable' or heavy, or adhearing, or thicker, or whatever word you want to use, than FF.

EDIT: I dug deeper. here it is. Sounds pretty reasonable.

NH Oil Undercoating® is a highly refined food-grade mineral oil product. Formulated with the environment in mind, NH Oil Undercoating is a nonhazardous unregulated product. It causes no health or flammability hazards.

The technical term is resolute oil, otherwise known as mineral oil. It is a food-safe grade oil, which means you can consume it in small quantities. Of course I’m not encouraging you to try. However, we had a customer call last year whose pet dog did just that. The only adverse reaction was loose stool! No solvents and no detergents. Corrosion inhibitors are all green and environmentally friendly.

Our oil has natural corrosion inhibitors otherwise known as “green inhibitors”, derived from plants and animal fats. Contains no solvents or detergents. It is an environmentally friendly product considering it does not drip. (Minimal dripping may occur). Our NH Back-N-Black has a biodegradable tint, otherwise the same as the clear product.

In our opinion, Oil-based rustproofing is the most forgiving way to treat corrosion.

Our oil is formulated to displace moisture, the presence of oil will deprive the surface of oxygen. When you take either out of the equation, oxidation cannot occur, so as long as the product is present rust is held at bay. NH Oil will simultaneously fight corrosion on a chemical level as well. The presence of the oil will form a barrier to protect the surface. NHOU Is formulated to migrate and creep. This is especially important to the weak areas of a vehicle, rocker panels, door panels, etc. areas that are by design prone to rust. The surfaces are generally unprotected with a finish (paint), prone to hold moisture and are very thin. Over the course of a warm month, it is not uncommon for our oil to move as much as several inches. In a cross member of a pickup truck bed, that would encapsulate the entire inside surface area. Having some surface rust can actually be a plus. Much like using an abrasive to scuff a surface prior to applying a finish, the rust will give the product something to hang on to.

    Cheers.

@UtahYankee I had NHOU applied to my Tacoma last November. The smell won’t last very long and as long as the product wasn’t sprayed all over your exhaust, the odor should be gone within a week or so. As @kidsmoke said, its food grade oil based - so its environmentally safe - we use FF on our work trucks and that smells far more and worse than NHOU. I have never used WW so I can’t compare it to that product. The undercarriage of my truck looks as good as it did the day after application - and I’ll have it applied again next November.

I had NHOU frame treatment done at Kalispell, MT during spring break 2022. The dealer has a construction business so he gets busy with that during the summer. At the time he had an appointment for a guy with a Ford with a big slide-in camper coming from AZ, and he wasn't sure what he'd do with the camper to fit it in his shop.

He explained that they bag the entire exhaust system before they spray, so there's no odor burning off the exhaust.
