New Way To Steal Our Toyotas

It’s a bit of a read, but this article details an as yet unheard of way (at least on this site) to steal Toyotas:

The articles point of attack is CAN bus access at the headlights. Our Tacomas do not have CAN controlled headlights, but many of us do have BSM modules very easily accessed. The BSM drivers side module has CAN.

Once inside, maybe they plugged into the OBD2 port with a scan tool or bootlegged TechStream and programmed a remote for themselves.

 

My take was that the CAN bus was used to send a code to one of the modules that a “Start” was authorized and the thieves just pressed the Start button.

Exactly. When looking at the various trims the SR just didn't cut it and anything above the SR5 had these fob-like-start-button-things
that just didn't sit well with me. Give me a key or give me death. If I were younger a stick-shift would have been in order but after 30
years my knees need a break - kids can't deal with a stick shift LOL.

 

Glad to be one of the SR poors everytime I see articles like this.

 

I wasn’t sure if they then moved to the OBD port to start it or managed to do that from the same connection via CAN.

I mean who would really want to steal a POS SR anyway.

Round thing on the dash with a trim ring that apparently has to be replaced or your friends will laugh at you.

 

Reading through this article I find the Tacoma is not on the current list of vehicles able to be stolen with this device.
