Just about to do my rear diff so i headed to the dealer to secure some crush washers (as well as for eng oil drain plug) and at the dealer they handed me these new washers i hadint seen before. for the differential they were an aluminum/soft metal instead of the rolled steel and the guy said while it would be ok for the rear diff since its steel the T case could crack if a steel one is used for the plugs. The engine oil drain plug was new as well and he said that they just dont use the blue ones anymore. Does anyone know or can confirm?20211112_105715.jpg
Left: new washer type, Right: Old washer type for differentials and T case.

Did they come in a Toyota parts bag and if so what were the part numbers?

My question is which way do you orient these crush washers? Do you place the flat part towards or away from the surface you are bolting it to?

From the factory the flat smooth side goes on the housing, the crush ring side on the bolt lip. I always remember that by presuming the crush ring may gouge an aluminum housing as it compresses.

The aluminum gaskets (90430-18008, 90430-T0021, or 90430-A0003) are for the transfer case fill/drain. The steel crush gaskets (12157-10010) are for the rear diff fill/drain and front diff fill. 90430-12031 is the correct oil drain plug gasket (right side in your photo) which is aluminum with fibre coatings. The full fibre gasket you got (90430-12028) is used in other applications.

The front diff drain gasket is 90430-24003.

Dealers often just grab gaskets that are the right size. The steel ones were never listed/used for the Tacoma t-case.

The crush washer orientation doesn’t seem to matter to sealing capability, but typically the flat side sits towards the housing to keep things smooth and nice.

About the only time you can take what a guy on a forum says on the internet to be true and not even question it in the slightest

Just changed the oil in both of my Tacomas (2020 & 2006) and the dealer sold me the blue gasket for the oil drain plugs.
