Picked up my 2022 TRD OR M/T this weekend...

I did feel the dealership treated me right and everything went smooth.

Except when I got home from the drive I noticed some scratches / marks. I didn't notice them at the dealership as the truck was indoors on display with ambient light from out side (overcast day). In my garage I have high output LED lighting. This LED lighting obviously will show everything as well as my phone it is a iPhone 13 Pro so the camera picks up things.. It looks worse in the pictures in all honesty.

I know its a black truck. I know I am going to put scuffs and scratches on it over the years. I honestly don't feel too emotional about it. Just looking to see what you guys think. Most of them I feel like can be buffed out except for the ones on the rear side of the roof i can feel with my fingernail. What could of caused this? Dealership? Shipping / handling issue? Factory issue? So weird. On the roof they literally go from the passenger side to the drive side.

Weird mark on front of roof second picture illustrates it going from driver side to passenger side, all the way accross. Also some scratches on the glass of the moon roof.

swirl marks on rear passenger door. has same swirl marks in between rear and front passenger door as well

there are a couple of other scratches but just posted these to show an idea of what the situation is like. Should I complain? Feel like once I drove it off the lot its out of their hands and now into mine. Hopefully the roof can buff out. I haven't contacted the dealership, I kinda feel stupid doing so. Most I feel their going to do is offer to take it in and buff everything out. But, I live 4 hours from the dealership, and secondly, if they let the truck go like this then I sure as shit don't trust the idiot that's detailing the vehicles there.

My last truck was a Tundra I owned for 4 years. In those 4 years it never had any of those kind of marks and it was the same color, midnight black metallic.

It looks like there might have been damage and they already tried buffing it out, based on the swirls, incorrectly... You really live 4hrs form the dealer? Might just be worth having someone detail it properly, ceramic coat it and forget about it... Definitely document it with the dealer immediately and see if they are willing to do anything about it...

I just picked up a black 3rd gen as well and for the most part I’m pretty satisfied with the paint condition. I have some pretty deep gouges on the hood in the clear coat and some swirls on the front end.

most of the stuff you’re seeing is residue from the white vinyl protector thing they put all over the truck for transport. The adhesive on those things is nasty and the dealership’s “detailer” probably used quite a bit of force with a microfiber to get the residue off.

Whatever you do, don’t have the dealership fix it. 90% chance their minimum wage detail guy has no idea how to use a DA polisher. Go to a professional detailer and send them the bill

Good advise above. Avoid the dealer especially being so far a way. Black trucks look awesome but a nightmare to maintain. I had a choice between Black and White. chose white immediately. Still a beautiful truck. Enjoy!

Honestly, the scratches really dont bug me THAT much especially since most of it is on the roof... I feel like its just going to open a can of worms. Do they look deep enough to where they are through the paint and will rust? I don't know any good or any professional detailers around me with my luck they'll make it worse!

are there any high end car sales places near you? They will likely know of a good detailer. It is going to cost a pretty penny, Maybe $500+ for a ceramic coat, but I wouldnt hesitate to do that anyway on a new truck.

I thought I saw scratches on my hood but it ended up being the adhesive from the hood wrap they come with. I was pissed at first. Hopefully you get your paint fixed. The roof scratches look deep.

Other than that, If it was me, I'd make an appointment in a larger city with a reputable detailer. Get it properly prepped and ceramic coated while new. Then maintain it myself moving forward.

After I wrote the above about cost, I did some research. I know my guy would charge me in the range of $500 for a ceramic coating, and I trust and use him every couple years. I did spend some time with him recently and he said it needs to be done every couple years, not the 5+ years that other say, so maybe he isnt using the best coating, however I know he knows all the steps extremely well and has done wonders on my trucks over the years.... You might be into it for more than $500 is what I am trying to say. I just happen to know my guy doesnt charge enough for what he does....

Here’s what I would do. I’d reach out to the dealer with the pictures. Ask if they would cover the cost of paint correction at a local detailer. Then have it ceramicly coated at the same time. Depending on your area it would cost anywhere from
    500-1000k to correct the paint.

as for rust or anything, nothing is passed the paint into the primer or clear coat so you’re fine on that. Most new cars come with swirls and scratched paint, specially black paint.

Also not sure what part of Minnesota you’re from but if it’s Minneapolis here Is a reputable detail shop with ceramic pro.

Car scratches bug me, I would get them buffed out.

I would send those pictures to the dealer and see if you can get something from them.
If you can't get anything treat it as a life-lesson and don't look back, you'll have plenty of positive times ahead with a nice truck like that

Ouch! Send the dealership these photos asap and take it back in for inspection.

Nobody tell this guy what's gonna happen the first time he takes his truck offroad.

Every time I get a brand new truck, the first thing I do at home is hit the rear quarter panel with a hammer to get it out of the way.

That being said, your pictures do look excessive for a factory new vehicle. I'd push this back on the dealer to make it right. If you're spending near $50k on a midsize pickup, the paint should show up clean and free of blemish.

The paint in the photos just do not look right. Is there a body and paint shop nearby that can take a look at the paint job and give you an idea as to what's up?

Very similar story with the dealer that I bought from being 3 hours away. I had a couple of minor blemishes on the hood of my 2022 TRD Pro that I decided I didn’t really care about since I was the only one that could see them, but was pretty shocked to see that the glass on the moonroof was really scratched; luckily the paint on top was spared.
I contacted the dealer and asked if this could be from some of the chains that they use on truck transports hitting it, and if mine could have been on the lower level of the transport with chains banging on the roof all the way from Mexico…only thing I could thing of.
He couldn’t come up with a better reason. I’m welcome to go back and see him or see if I can get it fixed here and send him a bill; really good dealer.
In the end I probably won’t do anything since it’s on the roof and it’s getting pinstriped every time I take it out wheeling.
Just wanted you to know that you’re not alone with these kinds of issues. :)

I’m sure everyone knows this in this day and age, but NEVER let a dealer wash and detail your new vehicle before pickup. A lot of dealers roll their eyes and swear by their detail crew but in all honesty, all it takes is one dropped wash mitt or cloth and that picks up sand or dirt and your new paint job is toast. Do you think the guy they pay $11 hour cares to get a new microfiber cloth after he drops it? Especially on dark vehicles.

Are you sure some of them are scratches and not the glue edge of the white plastic they put on the trucks to ship them?
