New TPMS and re-learn or transfer the old ones?

I just bought some new rims to replace my stock TRDOR 16 inch rims but i intend on putting new rubber on the new set as well since id like to move on from the wranglers.

Should i have the TPMS valves moved over to the new set at the shop or buy new sensors and have them reprogrammed? either way im going to sell the old set of wheels/tires for whatever they go for these days.

 

Move them over and that allows more buyers for your old wheels.

You will have to reprogram the truck's TPMS with new sensors.

 

TPMS sensor batteries typically last 5-7 years, so the factory sensors still have a lot of life remaining. Does the shop have a service kit for the sensors (new O-rings, new valve core, new hardware) if you choose to move them over to your new wheels?

 

I plan to go with Americas Tire (Discount Tire) so i have yet to talk to them to see if that's something they do.

 

^Need the service kit, or at least one of the four sensors will leak after being moved over to the new wheels.

my 2009 still has the factory TPMS Sensors..no problems yet

According to the CCN (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkJJabCQaqA, ~17:00), the newer 2018+ sensors work without reprogramming. The clue apparently is the valve stem - if they're rubber, they'll self-program. Have not tested this.

 

The dude says "most....not all" and doesn't mention Tacoma.

I just walked into a random tire shop and the guy told me the valves lose programming as soon as they are removed from the rim?? and that reprogramming would cost $95...

Then i walked into Americas tire and they said the valves dont need to be reprogrammed at all.

Who is right? my guess is Americas tire.

 

Discount tires had transfer them to my new 17" wheels and tires with mount and balance. I dont think there was any extra charge. Less than $100 otd . They installed my wheel spacers too for no charge.

Maybe they were being nice that day. A year later, they wanted almost $200 to do my brother Tundra with 20" wheels.

Another tire shop told me it wasn't possible to move the tpms to my new Icon wheels. Clearly wrong

If the OEM sensors come out of your stock wheels and are installed in your new wheels, he is correct.

 

i just watched CCN's video, maybe the ones that allow for non-destructive disassembly (18'+) dont need reprogramming?

 

the more i read about this the more i just want to do it myself, but i dont want to fork out money for the equipment for something that will be done once lol.

-in addition to CCN's reccomendation to use OEM valve rebuild kits i wouldint want the shops kits to have them leak later

If the sensors that are already programmed in to the Tacoma are installed in new wheels, that is correct.
